Van Edward Hertel

On June 5, 2026, Van Edward Hertel of Nokomis, FL passed peacefully into eternity at the age of 81. Van was born in Newton, Massachusetts to Frederick Ernest Hertel Jr. and Dorothy Elizabeth Hertel. He loved the outdoors and fondly recounted summers spent growing up at his family’s Lake Winnipesaukee home.

Van graduated from Manchester West High School in 1962, and the University of New Hampshire in 1966 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He loved his country and served as a Second Lieutenant in the Vietnam War.

In 1984, Van married his beloved wife, Constance (Connie) Anderson. Through 42 years of marriage, they raised three wonderful children together: Van Hertel Jr, (Lora), Erika Gray (Larry), and Heidi Faulkner (Jon).

Van was a tireless worker and well known throughout New Hampshire and Maine for his work in the land business. He possessed a deep appreciation of the outdoors and was never happier than when walking a boundary line and cruising timber in the woods. He was blessed to turn his love for the outdoors and land into his life’s work.

Van’s faith in Christ was the foundation of his life. He loved the Lord deeply and found his strength and direction in the Word of God. He was a firm believer in Christian education, and supported many Christian schools in the New England area over the years. The Wilds Christian Camp in Deering, NH held a very special place in his heart, and he found joy in funding many scholarships for young people to attend.

Time spent with family was most meaningful to Van, and he loved sharing stories, laughter, and guidance with his grandchildren. Though he loved pursuing real estate ventures and pouring his heart into work, he found his greatest joy more recently in being called “G-Pops” by his great grandchildren.

Van is survived by his wife, Connie; his children; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister Dodie Houle (Larry); sister-in-law Mary-Beth Hertel; and a community of loved ones who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Dorothy, and his brother, Fred.

A celebration of Van’s life will be held at 1:30 pm on August 31, 2026, at Wolfeboro Bible Church in Wolfeboro, NH.

Gerald Richard Hess

WOLFEBORO --- Gerald "Jerry" Hess, dedicated educator, proud Army veteran, and much loved family member, passed away peacefully on June 12th at the age of 82.

Born in Milford CT, Jerry lived a life marked by service, learning, and civic engagement. After completing a year of college, Jerry felt called to enlist in the United States Army in the early 1960s. He was stationed in West Berlin just after the Berlin Wall was constructed. He was a military police officer, and due to his performance was assigned to sensitive posts. His experience watching the harsh oppression of the people of East Berlin seeking freedom from the Iron Curtain greatly shaped his belief in the responsibility of all to protect democracy.

After honorably serving in the Army, Jerry returned to the states and college, completing a bachelor's degree in history, and then master's and 6th year degrees in Education. Over his nearly 40-year teaching career he taught every age group, from elementary through adult education. He was passionate about supporting kids and a zealous advocate for students with learning differences. During retirement Jerry continued his support of kids in need by volunteering with organizations including End 68 Hours of Hunger.

Colored by his experiences in Berlin, he was an active member of the Democratic Party, believing strongly in civic responsibility, public service, community involvement, and helping others. Whether writing editorials, volunteering, attending local meetings, or advocating for causes he cared about, Jerry worked tirelessly to make the community and the country a better place for everyone.

Above all, Jerry was a devoted husband, parent, grandparent, and sibling, who cherished family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, generosity, perseverance, faith, love of variety (especially of food!), and for the lasting impact he made on countless lives.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judith Hess; his daughter Jennifer Tichy and her husband Gerald; his son Scott Hess and his wife Sara, and their children; his siblings Benjamin "Spike" Hess and his wife Rosalie, Jacquelyn Hess-Sperry, Martin Newman and his wife Joanne, and Deborah Newman; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and James Thomas; as well as many nieces and nephews.

An outdoor service with military honors will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Lake View Cemetery, North Main St, Wolfeboro, NH. Comfortable, cheerful attire is welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to End 68 Hours of Hunger.

Judy Ellen Snow

ALTON --- Judy Ellen Snow, 74, of Alton, died peacefully, June 2, 2026, at her home in Alton surrounded by loved ones after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born on May 14, 1952, in Claremont, NH, to Kenneth and Ruth (Baker) Bascom of Acworth, who have both preceded her in death.

After graduating from Fall Mountain High School in Langdon, and SUNY at Cobleskill, Judy pursued her passion for culinary arts embarking on a remarkable career. Her journey included working at The Narragansett by the Sea in Kennebunk, ME, to Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg, AZ, to the Triangle X Ranch in Jackson Hole, WY, followed by a brief stint in Kearney, NE, and finally back home to NH, ending her career at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH.

In 1988, Judy married Joseph E. Snow. Joe's mother, Glenny, was so happy and thankful as Judy brightened Joe's smile and became part of the Snow Family. For 38 years they enjoyed a life filled with adventure, love, and shared passions. As avid hikers they summited over 45 trails in the White Mountains, and at home Judy found joy in cooking, gardening, sewing quilts, collecting stamps, and completing jigsaw puzzles.

Known for her quick wit and the ability to make everyone feel welcome, Judy's home was always open to friends and family. Her humor, kindness, and genuine interest in others endeared her to all. Judy enjoyed Bascom Family celebrations and reunions with her extended family. Judy was loved by the Snow Family for her quiet presence, smile and sincere interest in all the family activities. The Cottage at Indian Mound Beach provided a special place for fun, relaxation and conversation. Everyone remembers receiving snow man, boat or dog themed Christmas cards and thoughtful birthday and anniversary cards. She made everyone feel special.

Family members include her husband, Joe; siblings Bruce (Liz), Nancy (Jim), and Brad (Beverley). The Snow Family includes late Glenny and Joseph Snow, parents, siblings Cary (Paula), late Bob (Roxann), Clare (Rick), Gretchen (Jerry), Sarah (late Dale), and Jim (Andrea); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A burial service to celebrate Judy's life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the Acworth Cemetery, 48 Hill Rd, followed by a time of reflection and sharing of memories at the Acworth Church.

Lois May Merrithew

Tamworth- A graduate of the Malden High School Class of 1950, Lois spent her youth in her multigenerational family home. She was an active member of the Centre Methodist Church in Malden from her youth. She met her husband and they married in 1951. They purchased the family home from her father in 1965 and raised their family there until 1972 when the dream opportunity arose to own a business and move to North Sandwich, NH. They did not hesitate and purchased "Ye Olde Corner Store". Lois found her niche when she began selling homes to family and friends. She and her dear friend Peg Huddleston bought & brokered Lloyd & Day RE in Tamworth for several years and remained actively selling homes until her retirement at 86. She leaves behind daughters, Susan Steeves and Judy Tuscano and sons Dana Merrithew (Jane), and Scott Merrithew. Lois was an "Only Child" but wanted a large family so her children would have each other to lean upon throughout life. She had her 5 children, followed by 17 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren! She is also survived by her SIL, Ruth Kelly, BIL, John Harper(Diana) and many nieces & nephews. Lois was welcomed into eternity by her Lord and Savior, Jesus. Waiting to greet her were her parents, George & Alleyne Callahan, her beloved husband, Edgar Merrithew, her son, Brad Merrithew, her daughter in law, Margaret Merrithew, her son in law, Mike Tuscano, her granddaughter, Patricia Peaslee & great granddaughter, Chloe.

Hazel Alice Chamberlain

WOLFEBORO --- Hazel Alice Chamberlain, 95, a resident of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026. Born on January 10, 1931, she was the daughter of Leslie M. and Margaret F. Chamberlain.

Growing up in Wolfeboro, she remained connected to the community throughout her life. Hazel was a graduate of Brewster Academy class of 1949.

Hazel was a devoted sister, aunt, and friend who cherished her family. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Helen Chamberlain, Margery Niblett, Mary Marden, Leslie Chamberlain, and Thelma Chamberlain.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Chamberlain and many nieces and nephews: Cindy, Mike, Pam, Ben, Chuck, Ana, Michael, Martha, Mark, Craig, and predeceased by Reg, Sam, and David. As a great aunt, she was loved by Jessica, Kevin, Emily, Brett, Kimberly, Eric, Kate, Bob, Andrew, Elise, Elysa, Seth, Sarah, Matt, Sally, Karin, Ted, and predeceased by David.

Hazel worked at the Wolfeboro Falls Post Office and Hatch Theatre before dedicating 38 years working for the phone company. Her career included a decade working for New England Tel and Tel as a switchboard operator on Glendon Street. She transferred to Manchester AT&T working in directory assistance and promoted to a supervisory position at Verizon.

Known for her love of animals and flowers, her kind spirit, and signature flannel plaid shirts, Hazel was a familiar face in town. You may have seen her walking along Center Street, chatting with friends downtown, or sitting in her car enjoying a donut and the daily newspaper with a cup of complimentary coffee.

A woman of great heart, Hazel was awarded the Governor's Volunteer Service Award by Stephen Merrill. She volunteered generously for the Wolfeboro Library, Huggins Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and The Telephone Pioneers of America.

A wonderful great-great aunt to so many, Carter being the youngest, she brought immense happiness to her family. Always a smile, as she enjoyed a visit with Ryan, Sami, Tommy, Griffin, and Emma, who beautifully said, "Hazel lived an amazing life and a really lucky life with all of us in it.

"Hazel believed that life was meant to be lived fully rather than marked by the sadness of a formal service. In place of a ceremony, please honor her memory with a simple cup of coffee, donut, ginger ale, or ice cream that she so dearly loved.

Dianne Lee Kelley

Dianne L. Kelley, age 73, of West Ossipee, NH, formerly of Somerville, MA, passed away on April 13, 2026, at Huggins Hospital.

She was the beloved wife of James R. Kelley, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in Somerville, MA, on January 29, 1953, Dianne was the daughter of Lawrence (Bob) Barry and Marion Barry (Ganshirt), and the sister of Donna Stevenson (predeceased) and Patricia Petitpas.

Dianne will be remembered for her great sense of humor and her warm, kind heart. She was always happy and smiling.

She is survived by her husband, James Kelley; her children, Adam Kelley and Jessie Kelley-Nickerson; her son-in-law, Joe Nickerson; and her daughter-in-law, Liana (Sellon) Kelley.

She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Maren and Charlie Kelley, Lily Nickerson, and her grandnephew, Thomas Stevenson.

She is also survived by her nephews, Kevin Stevenson and Matthew Petitpas; her niece, Bethanie Petitpas; and her nephew, Eric Stevenson (predeceased).

She will be deeply missed by her numerous cousins and many friends, all of whom she loved very much.

Dianne also had many other "kids" through her work with children in the Tewksbury school system for nearly 20 years.

Family was everything to her. When friends and family were visiting, she would always say, "Happiness is..."

A celebration of life will be held at a future date.

John Mathes

John R. Mathes II

March 31, 1944 - April 10, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John R. Mathes II, 82, of Tamworth, New Hampshire.

He was the beloved husband of Carol A. Mathes for 56 years, also of Tamworth, and the father of Laurie Mathes of Maine, and Kathleen Mathes Little and her husband Matthew Little of Massachusetts. He was the grandfather of four loving grandchildren, Isabelle, Jack, Porter, and Carolin, and his sweet and faithful dog Andy.

John was born in Dover, New Hampshire March 31, 1944 to his parents Valentine and Ruth Mathes. John's siblings were Ann Mathes (deceased), and James Mathes of Dover, New Hampshire. John graduated from Holderness School and the University of New Hampshire. Following college, John joined the US Marine Corps, something he was very proud of.

John had many interests. He loved to read, and had a large collection of all genres of books. He was a passionate lover of music, something he shared with his daughters. John was a history buff and enjoyed conversing about all sorts of interesting historic and scientific facts. John loved the outdoors, taking the family camping and hiking in the White Mountains. He was a lover of winter and for a number of years, John enjoyed volunteering with the Sandwich N.H. Sled Dog Races. After 25 years of working at the Dunkin Donuts headquarters in Massachusetts, he retired and moved to Tamworth surrounded by the mountains he loved so dearly.

John loved to travel. He and Carol took many wonderful trips, and their favorites were exploring the amazing American West. Some of their favorite places of travel were the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon, South Dakota visiting Crazy Horse Memorial and the historic town of Deadwood.

John will be greatly missed by his family, and those that knew and loved him well.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday, April 17, 2026 at 10:30 at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home in West Ossipee, New Hampshire, followed by a luncheon at The River's Edge Grille & Tavern at the Indian Mound Golf Club.

Elizabeth Skarnulis

Wolfeboro - Elizabeth A. Skarnulis, 85, of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026.

Elizabeth was born on September 15, 1940, in Astoria, Queens, New York, to the late Harry Williamson and Elizabeth (Blades) Williamson.

Elizabeth was more of a homebody who found joy in life's quiet and simple moments. She was a collector of blue glass pieces and loved displaying them throughout her home. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, often spending time simply observing them. Naturally curious, she had a strong interest in science and health and enjoyed learning what she could. She also loved reading and saving articles that caught her attention.

More than anything, Elizabeth cherished the time she spent with her husband, David. Married for over 50 years, their relationship was a central part of her life. Together, they loved riding their Harleys across the country, sharing that sense of adventure side by side.

Elizabeth leaves behind her niece, Laurie Orella and her husband, Christopher Orella; her great-nieces and great-nephews, Brett, Courtney, and Nicole; as well as many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, David Skarnulis, and her siblings, Ruby, Lillian, Sidney, Virginia, and Harry.

Patricia A Adamowski

Patricia A. Adamoswki, loving wife, mother, grandmother

Ossipee, NH

Patricia A. Adamowski, age 83, of Ossipee, NH, formerly of Dracut, MA, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, at Wolfeboro Bay following an extended illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth W. Adamowski, with whom she shared 58 devoted years of marriage before his passing in 2020.

Born in Lowell on May 11, 1942, Patricia was the daughter of the late Warren and Florence (Scanlon) Gibson. She was a proud graduate of Keith Academy. On July 1, 1962, she married the love of her life, Ken, and together they began their life in Lowell before eventually settling in Dracut, MA. Pat and Ken proudly owned and operated Unlimited Technical Coatings, Inc., building a successful small family business that they managed together for many years prior to their retirement.

Pat will be remembered for her gentle kindness, lighthearted humor, and deep devotion to her family. She found her greatest happiness in time spent with those she loved, especially with her beloved dog, Milo, who brought her comfort and companionship. Above all, family was the center of Pat's world. Her legacy of love, warmth, and steadfast care will continue to live on in all who knew her.

Pat shared a particularly special bond with her daughter, Karen, rooted in deep love and devotion. In her later years, Pat made her home with Karen, who cared for her with extraordinary compassion, attentiveness, and unwavering dedication.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Karen P. Leclair and her husband, Robert, of Ossipee, NH; her son, Steven K. Adamowski and his wife, MaryLou Stroumbos, of Tewksbury, MA; and her cherished grandchildren, Shauna and Evan Adamowski, who adored their Grammy. She also leaves her sister, Florence Freitas and her husband, Paul, of Chelsea, MA; her sister-in-law, Nancy M. Gibson of New York; sister-in-law, Shirley Klein of Arizona; sister-in-law Judy Adamowski of Nashua, NH and many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Pat was predeceased by her brother, Warren "Bucky" Gibson.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Pat's memory to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Baker-Gagne Funeral Home.

This Valentine’s Day, Mayhew Funeral Home and Baker-Gagne Funeral Home were honored to team up for a special community project celebrating connection across generations.

We provided local elementary schools in the Meredith and Wolfeboro/Ossipee areas with art supplies so students could create heartfelt Valentine’s cards. The creativity and kindness poured into each one was truly inspiring!

We then coordinated pick-up and delivery to local nursing homes, where the cards became part of their Valentine’s Day celebrations. The smiles were across the board — from the students who made them to the residents who received them.

Moments like these remind us how meaningful simple acts of kindness can be. We’re grateful to the schools, nursing homes, and everyone who helped make this day so special. 💌
