Introducing RELIQ #7: FAIRLY ENCHANTED

It was just an ordinary hike, on quite an ordinary spring day. The grass was just coming up green and lush, violets sprung in mounds amongst the mossy rocks which lined the hillside. There was an inexplicable sweetness in the air, so light that it made you wonder if it were just your imagination. And then you saw them, tiny red jewels of fruit springing amidst their white flowers, so small it seemed they grew from quite another land. Wild mountain strawberries! Refreshed by their sweetness, you settle into the nook of a tree for a short rest, the fallen pine needles beneath you a golden amber bed. Somewhere in the distance, the sound of lively music and a soft laughter begins to travel towards you, the warm sunlight growing a brighter and brighter gold...

An enchanted elixir that begins green and verdant and dries to sun-warmed strawberry, Fairly Enchanted is little bit green, a little bit gourmand. Perfect for those who have a youthful love for adventure, winged creatures, and sweet delights!

💨 FRAGRANCE NOTES ARE NOT INGREDIENTS 💦

Here's why natural perfumery is something rather extraordinary. 🌱

When you purchase a perfume or scented product described as having notes of rose, sandalwood, jasmine, amber, or moss, you might reasonably assume those materials are actually in the bottle.

But here's something the fragrance industry rarely explains clearly:

A fragrance note is a description of a smell. It is not necessarily an ingredient. More often, it is not.

A perfume advertising rose may contain genuine rose absolute—or a rose accord constructed entirely from synthetic aromatic molecules (fragrance oils). A sandalwood note does not guarantee sandalwood oil. An amber note may be a carefully constructed aromatic impression rather than a botanical resin.

The notes tell you what a perfume is intended to evoke. They don't necessarily tell you what went into making it.

So what makes natural perfumery different?

Natural perfumery begins with actual aromatic materials obtained from nature: flowers, leaves, roots, woods, seeds, peels, mosses, and resins.

And these materials are astonishingly complex.

A single botanical extract can contain hundreds of naturally occurring aromatic constituents. Its character is influenced by geography, climate, soil, harvest, and extraction method. Two harvests of the same plant may smell subtly different.

A natural rose is not simply a rose note. It is an intricate aromatic substance, with facets that may be green, spicy, fruity, honeyed, or earthy.

These nuances are part of what makes working with naturals so fascinating.

Why is genuinely natural perfume uncommon?

Modern perfumery relies heavily on synthetic aromatic materials, because they offer consistency, affordability, powerful effects, and sometimes access to scents that cannot readily be extracted from nature.

Natural materials, by contrast, can be expensive, difficult to source, variable from harvest to harvest, and challenging to formulate with. Some require enormous quantities of plant material to produce very small amounts of aromatic extract.

They demand a different kind of attention from the perfumer: an intimate understanding of their chemistry, volatility, complexity, and interactions.

This isn't to suggest that synthetic perfumery lacks artistry, or that natural automatically means safer or more sustainable. Both approaches involve science, skill, and important choices.

But they are not the same art.

At RELIQ, natural perfumery is a deliberate choice.

I work with botanical aromatic materials because I find their complexity, individuality, and connection to the natural world extraordinary and significant.

My goal isn't simply to reproduce the idea of a forest, a flower, or a sun-warmed landscape. It is to compose fragrances from the aromatic materials that nature actually provides.

Each perfume is an exploration of botany, chemistry, place, and imagination.

In a world increasingly devoted to replication and uniformity, there is something deeply compelling about working with materials that have their own history, their own variations, and their own character.

Notes describe the experience. Ingredients tell the story.

And at RELIQ, the ingredients matter.
