In Youngstown, Mercy Health is strengthening access to care by opening its new Community Health Resource Center and launching its Care-A-Van mobile health unit. The new 7,645-square-foot Community Health Resource Center serves as a centralized hub for community programming, prescription assistance, healthy cooking instruction, exercise programs and services for the community.

Located near Mercy Health — St. Elizabeth Hospital and along a major bus route, the center was intentionally designed to reduce transportation barriers and make services easier to access for community members. By bringing multiple programs and services together in one location, the center helps connect individuals to the broad range of outreach resources available through Mercy Health and its partners.

The market also celebrated the Blessing of the Care-A-Van, marking the final preparation phase before launching mobile health care services for uninsured community members. The Care-A-Van will help bring health care directly into neighborhoods where residents may otherwise struggle to access medical services.

Together, these initiatives directly address the community’s priority of access to care identified in the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Mercy Health — Youngstown continues to strengthen trust and engagement through long-standing community partnerships and events such as the 300 Sisters program, which promotes women’s health and wellness throughout the region.

Jennifer Enyeart spent most of her life struggling with her weight. “I’ve been overweight since I was a child,” she shares. “I tried different diets and different approaches, but nothing really worked long term.”

Although she considered weight loss surgery over the years, fear and uncertainty kept her from moving forward. “I was nervous about surgery,” Jennifer says. “I kept hoping I could do it on my own.”

As she approached 40, Jennifer began thinking more seriously about her future health.

“I didn’t have health issues yet, but I worried they were coming,” she explains. “I knew I needed to make a change.”

Jennifer already knew and trusted Mercy Health surgeon Benjamin Biteman, MD, after previously having gallbladder surgery with him.

“He was always kind, thorough and easy to talk to,” she says. “When you’re talking about weight, that can feel uncomfortable or embarrassing, but he never made me feel judged. He was always encouraging.”

When Jennifer decided to explore bariatric surgery, that trust helped her feel more confident about her decision. After discussing her options, she chose sleeve gastrectomy.

“Dr. Biteman explained everything clearly and helped me decide what was best for me,” she says. “I felt supported through the entire process.”

Jennifer says the biggest adjustment after surgery wasn’t physical, but mental. “I had to completely change my lifestyle,” she shares. “I was an emotional eater, so learning healthier coping skills was probably the hardest part.”

Over time, those lifestyle changes became part of her routine.

Today, Jennifer starts most mornings with a workout class at Fit Body Boot Camp or a three-mile walk before work. She also prioritizes staying active throughout the day.

“I have so much more energy now,” she says. “Even simple things like traveling or being active throughout the day are easier.”

The changes have also allowed her to spend more quality time with her 17-year-old daughter.
Jennifer credits both her care team and her family and boyfriend for helping her succeed.

“Everyone was so supportive,” she says. “From the nutrition team to the office staff, everyone was encouraging.”

After losing weight, Jennifer also underwent several skin removal procedures with Mercy Health plastic surgeon Adam Cash, MD.

“Those surgeries were definitely more difficult,” she says. “But having doctors I trusted made all the difference.”

Today, Jennifer says she has one major regret: waiting so long to take the first step. “If you’re thinking about it, don’t wait,” she says. “It feels scary at first, but for me, it was completely worth it.”

This Easter Sunday, join us as we celebrate and remember Jesus' resurrection with this prayer.

God of life and love,
Today we celebrate the joyous feast of Easter, commemorating that first Easter Sunday when you raised your son Jesus from the grave to enjoy new and everlasting life. In the midst of the crosses we bear through life, may our celebration of Jesus’ resurrection renew us in faith, strengthen us in hope, and inspire within us a greater commitment to love generously and courageously. Open our hearts to the gift of your Spirit, that we might aspire to live in the light of the newness of life and love your son’s resurrection makes possible. We make this prayer through Christ our risen Lord.

May today bring you peace and a renewed sense of faith. Have a blessed Good Friday!
