From severe dependence to confident mobility in just 42 days.

At 71, Mrs Burr was admitted to Faircape Health Institute Somerset West following a left MCA stroke, presenting with significant mobility, balance, and communication challenges. She initially required assistance with most daily activities and was only able to walk short distances with support.

Through focused, interdisciplinary rehabilitation - including gait re-education, strengthening, balance training, and cognitive support - she made remarkable progress. By discharge, she was walking independently over 200 metres without a device, safely navigating stairs, and had regained a high level of independence.

A powerful example of perseverance, and the impact of dedicated, interdisciplinary care.

Our long-term patients at our Cle du Cap, with the support of Occupational Therapy team, gave back to the community by preparing and donating 70 sandwiches to Marsh Memorial Children’s Home in Rondebosch.

This purposeful activity forms part of our therapeutic approach, supporting fine motor skills, cognitive engagement, and social interaction, while fostering a sense of meaning and contribution among our residents.

Not only did this initiative support children in need, but it also highlighted how Occupational Therapy helps our patients stay active, connected, and engaged in meaningful ways.

A beautiful reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
