Alcohol helped me escape my life. Sobriety helped me build one.

I wasn’t hiding under a bridge. I wasn’t drinking from the moment I woke up. From the outside, life looked fine.

Job. Family. Friends. Holidays. Nights out.

Yet somehow alcohol became the reward, the switch-off button, the confidence boost, the way to celebrate, commiserate and get through the week.

What I didn’t realise at the time was that every hour spent escaping was an hour not spent creating.
-Creating the life I wanted.
-Creating the energy I wanted.
-Creating the confidence I wanted.
-Creating the future I kept talking about but never fully committing to.

Removing alcohol didn’t magically hand me a better life. It handed me my time back. And with that time came choices.

-Choices to learn.
-Choices to grow.
-Choices to start things that scared me.
-Choices to become someone I was proud of.

The biggest surprise wasn’t that I stopped drinking.
The biggest surprise was discovering how much potential had been sitting underneath the drinking all along.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether alcohol is helping you live your life or helping you avoid it - and you’d like some support - book a call with me and let’s work it through.

David Bowie on Sobriety: The Decision That Saved His Life

David Bowie

Born: January 8, 1947
Died: January 10, 2016

David Bowie was one of the most influential artists of all time—a musician, actor, and creative visionary who spent decades reinventing himself and inspiring generations. While his talent captivated the world, Bowie also faced serious struggles with addiction, particularly during the height of his fame.

After experiencing the destructive impact of substance use, Bowie chose a different path. He embraced sobriety and often spoke about how important it was to his well-being, creativity, and survival.

“I’m an alcoholic, so it would be the kiss of death for me to start drinking again.”

Those words reflect a reality many people in recovery understand. Sobriety isn’t about giving something up—it’s about protecting everything you’ve worked so hard to build. For Bowie, staying sober meant preserving his health, his purpose, and the life he fought to reclaim.

Recovery is not a limitation. It’s a commitment to yourself, your future, and the people who care about you.

If you’re walking that path today, keep going. Every day sober is a victory worth protecting.
