Sound has been collected by the pinna. Now it needs somewhere to go. The external auditory canal, better known as the ear canal.

Think of it as an acoustic passageway between the outside world and your eardrum. Sound is funneled into this narrow canal and directed towards the tympanic membrane.

But the canal isn't simply an empty tube. Its physical dimensions give it important acoustic properties. It can naturally enhance certain frequencies before sound even reaches the eardrum.

In other words, your outer ear is already doing acoustic work before the middle ear and inner ear take over.

Close your eyes. Someone drops their keys behind you. You don't only hear the sound, you immediately want to turn towards it. How?

Your brain uses several clues to work out where sound comes from and your outer ears are part of the system. Before sound even enters the ear canal, it interacts with the pinna's unique curves and folds. Sound from above, below, behind or in front interacts slightly differently, changing what reaches your eardrum and giving your brain localisation cues.

Before you even think about it, your ears have sprung into action, helping your brain answer one extremely important question: where did that sound come from?

Take a closer look at your ear. It isn't a simple smooth funnel. It has ridges, valleys, folds and hollows. And they all have names!

Meet the pinna (auricle): helix, antihelix, co**ha, tragus, antitragus and the soft lobule. It's made mostly of elastic cartilage covered by skin. Those curves aren't just decorative. They collect and modify incoming sound before directing it towards the ear canal; and the way sound interacts with these folds helps your auditory system work out where a sound came from.

Your strangely shaped ear is actually part of your sound-location system.

Happy Spring Day! While the world springs into action around you, your ears have been quietly doing it every single day.

When we think about hearing, we think of the cochlea, the hearing nerve and the brain. But hearing actually begins outside your head. The outer ear is a beautifully designed acoustic system: it collects sound, directs it into the ear canal, enhances certain frequencies and helps protect the deeper structures of the ear.

Over the next seven posts we're following a sound wave on its journey through this incredible little system.
Next: why is your ear shaped like that?

Once you're comfortable with your hearing aids, we practise real-world listening: because life doesn't happen in a soundproof room.

Coffee shops, restaurants, family gatherings, the car, shopping centres; we help you succeed in the places that matter most to you.

Our goal is for hearing to become natural again, not something you constantly have to think about.

Listening is a skill, and your brain can improve with practice. Aural rehabilitation strengthens the specific skills your brain needs:
-Telling similar sounds apart (like "fifteen" vs "fifty")
-Remembering spoken information
-Filling in missing pieces when there's noise
-Processing speech more quickly

It’s just like strengthening muscles through exercise.
