HELP doesn’t always sound like “I need help.” Sometimes, it looks like acting out.
For someone struggling with addiction, pain can come out as anger, isolation, dishonesty, frustration, or behaviour that pushes the people they love away. Behind some of these behaviours can be a person who doesn’t know how to say, “I’m not okay. I need help.”
For families, the response matters. ❤️
Don’t immediately judge, argue, shame, or take the behaviour personally. Listen beyond the behaviour. Ask what is really going on, acknowledge their feelings, and encourage them toward appropriate professional support.
But remember: helping does not mean enabling. Set healthy boundaries, protect yourself and your family, and don’t take responsibility for someone else’s recovery.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can say is:
“I hear you. I’m here to help you get help.”
At Nova Vitae Recovery Centre, we believe that asking for help can take many forms and sometimes you just have to learn how to recognise it.
