We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Nerisha on completing her Virtual Hand to Shoulder Fellowship (VHF) qualification!

Nerisha’s dedication to continuous learning is an inspiration, and we’re excited that our team and patients will all benefit from her enhanced knowledge, skills, and excellent expertise!

Here is Nerisha's feedback:

"18 months. Countless hours. Plenty of challenges. One incredible journey. 🤝

Today I’m grateful to have completed the Virtual Hand to Shoulder Fellowship.
This wasn’t just a course, it was a season of growth. There were emotional battles, life stressors and relentless deadlines, but I kept reminding myself:

"Perseverance is not the absence of adversity, but the determination to keep moving despite it."

One of the greatest lessons has been discovering the true power of palpation. It has completely changed the way I understand anatomy, strengthening my foundation and allowing me to assess with greater confidence and precision. 🤲🏽

To my family - thank you for carrying me through the difficult days and believing in me when I needed it most. ❤️

And to Richter Therapy, thank you for investing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity". 🙏💚

Richter Therapy had the privilege of joining Mondi Wellness Day in Richards Bay on 23 June.

We spent time with the Mondi team, sharing how we can support them through:
- Return-to-work assessments
- Hand injury and splint management
- Burns therapy
- Vocational rehabilitation

We also challenged the Mondi workers to test their fine motor coordination by turning circular blocks, seeing who could complete the most in 30 seconds!

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, educate, and empower workers on their wellness journey.

The role of Occupational Therapy in the Neonatal ICU (NICU)

How do we provide care for infants in the Neonatal ICU?

Occupational therapy in the NICU supports premature and medically fragile infants through specialized interventions.

This includes soft splints for hand positioning, reflex assessments, and neurodevelopmental techniques that simulate normal milestones, laying the foundation for healthy growth and development.

Here Nerisha has crafted unique soft hand splints to support the collateral ligaments and prevent deformity.

Another inspiring recovery story following National Burns Awareness Week:

Zululand is not for softies!

What started as a relaxing fishing trip quickly became a lesson in how dangerously hot north coast sand can be.

One of our patients sustained deep burns to his foot from the scorching sand whilst fishing one weekend.

With daily baths, Flamazine glove wound care, and intentional mobilization, his toes are now almost fully healed! We are so happy with his results.

See his amazing progress below as well as the Flamazine foot glove wound care process.

National Burns Awareness Week

This National Burns Week, we would like to share a success story of one of our burn's patients:

Over 100 occupational therapy sessions transformed this devastating electrical burn to his right arm and hand into a story of resilience and recovery.

Starting with daily flamazine glove wound care as well as protective splinting in the intrinsic plus position, stiffness seemed like a permanent barrier.

But through intensive hand therapy exercises and fine motor training, our patient regained full composite flexion.

As seen in the video below, today, his hand is fully functional. He was able to go back to full duties at work.

His story is a testament to perseverance, skilled therapy, and the power of healing.

Did you know that OTs also do pre-employment screenings?

Ready for the Job?
Before stepping into a physically demanding role, it’s important to know if your body is up for the challenge. That’s where pre-employment screenings come in!

What does it entail exactly?
As Occupational Therapists, we’re trained to assess strength, flexibility, and endurance through simulated work activities, making sure the job fits the person, and the person fits the job. Firstly, we carefully analyse the job demands to see what it will demand from your body!

Our goal is simple:
- Keep workers safe
- Prevent injuries
- Improve productivity

It is World Head Injury day.
As OTs we are involved with Head Injured Patients from the time they are admitted to ICU.

What do we do exactly?

- OTs make special splints to protect healing structures (like the brain).

- OTs splint the hands and support the feet to prevent deformity while the patient is getting better!

- OTs orientate patients to their environment and start with sensory and cognitive stimulation early.

- OTs help patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), like brushing hair, getting dressed and eating so that they can moved to the ward sooner.

- OTs play an important role when it comes to family education & support: we guide families on safe handling, positioning, and the rehabilitation process ahead.

Our focus is to guide patients through the maze of recovery so that they can, with confidence, truly live again.

This past weekend, Frances and her two teammates took on the Calling Cape Town Fundraiser Challenge - an ultra-triathlon involving an 8km ocean swim, the CT Cycle Tour and the Three Peaks ultra trail run all in one day. They did this to raise funds for Calling Education, an organisation that is revolutionising education in our country.

Frances completed the swim. We are so proud of her - congratulations Frances and team!
