In a recent episode of the Health with Heart podcast, Dr Benji Ozinsky of the joins Dr Skye for a fascinating exploration of sleep, insomnia and the brain.

They unpack sleep architecture, the roles of REM and deep sleep, and why sedation is not necessarily the same as restorative sleep.

They also examine sleeping tablets and other sedative drugs, their benefits and limitations, and the risks associated with long-term use. Dr Ozinsky explains CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia), why it is considered the gold standard treatment for chronic insomnia, and what the relationship between disrupted sleep, ageing and dementia may reveal about brain health.

Whether you struggle with insomnia, prescribe sleep medication or simply want to understand what happens after you close your eyes, this conversation offers a clear, evidence-informed guide to the science of better sleep.

Topics include insomnia, sleep architecture, REM sleep, deep sleep, sedatives, sleeping tablets, sleep medication, CBT-I, dementia, ageing, memory, hormone health, sleep deprivation and brain health.

Cortisol has become the internet's favourite hormone to blame.

Feeling tired? Cortisol.
Struggling to sleep? Cortisol.
Gaining weight? Cortisol.

But the truth is far more nuanced.

Cortisol isn't the enemy - it's an essential hormone that helps regulate your stress response, energy, metabolism, immune function and even your sleep-wake cycle. The problem isn't cortisol itself, but when chronic stress keeps your body in a constant state of high alert.

In a recent article by Dr Skye Scott published in the Wellness Warehouse Magazine, May

• What cortisol actually does in the body
• Why social media gets so much wrong about "high cortisol"
• The signs that chronic stress may be affecting your health
• Practical, evidence-based ways to support a healthy stress response through sleep, nutrition, movement and nervous system regulation.

Understanding your hormones starts with separating science from sensationalism.

We recently finished reading Super Agers: An Evidence-Based Approach to Longevity by Eric Topol and one message stood out clearly: healthy ageing is about far more than genetics.

The book explores how everyday habits such as regular movement, quality sleep, strong social connections, and proactive healthcare can significantly influence both lifespan and healthspan.

It was a powerful reminder that - while medical advances continue to transform healthcare - many of the foundations of living well for longer remain firmly within our control. As healthcare professionals, helping people build these habits is one of the most meaningful ways we can support lifelong wellbeing.

💉 A new chapter in HIV prevention is here!

Lenacapavir is a long-acting HIV prevention injection that can help protect against HIV for up to six months with a single dose.

We've been waiting for this to become available and we are excited to say it is finally available to South Africans!

Before starting Lenacapavir, it's important to have an HIV test to confirm that this prevention option is right for you. A healthcare professional can also discuss whether it suits your individual needs and answer any questions you may have.

Visit your nearest clinic or Community Health Centre to learn more about Lenacapavir and your HIV prevention options.

At Health with Heart, we believe informed choices are empowered choices.

Most colds, flu, coughs, and sore throats are caused by viruses, which means antibiotics are most often needed. Rest, hydration, symptom relief, and good hand hygiene are often the best ways to support recovery.

Using antibiotics only when necessary helps prevent antibiotic resistance and reduces the risk of unwanted side effects.

If symptoms worsen, don't improve as expected, or you have concerns about your health, seek medical advice promptly.
