Every problem you carry is doing a job for you. It has to be, otherwise you would have let it go by now.
This is what we call secondary gain. The hidden benefits to having a problem. And it is one of the most overlooked forces in human behaviour.
On some level, everyone has it. The part of you that gets something from staying stuck. Attention. Sympathy. A reason to not try. A shield from expectation. And none of that makes you wrong. It makes you human.
If you subscribe to being your most powerful and magnificent self, then you subscribe to cause and effect. We are the creators of our universe. Conscious creators, or unconscious creators. And the unconscious ones are the ones that run the show without your permission.
Secondary gain is an unconscious limiting decision. One that prevents you from being, doing, or having exactly what you want. The problem isn’t just the problem. The problem is the payoff you didn’t know you were collecting.
I worked with a client who had built a successful life. Financially thriving. And yet during the lockdowns he ended up with a rare heart condition. It robbed him of his independence. No driving. Barely working. Daily tasks became monumental. And somewhere along the line, a decision was made. He became so committed to showing people he was suffering that he became worse.
That is the power of the unconscious mind. It will always move toward what it believes is true, even if that truth is destroying you.
So I wonder. What is your problem doing for you? And what would happen if it no longer needed to?
