Sound storm is an important part of our evidence-based treatment battery for Auditory Processing deficits.

When a child struggles to follow instructions in a noisy classroom, it isn’t always an attention issue.

In many cases, the challenge lies in how the brain processes sound.

Children with Spatial Processing Disorder can hear normally, but have difficulty filtering out competing noise and identifying where sound is coming from. In busy classrooms, this can look like:

- Frequently asking for repetition

- Delayed responses to verbal instructions

- Increased fatigue or withdrawal

- Behaviour that escalates later in the day

These children are often trying harder than it appears.

For educators and learning support teams, recognising the difference between listening effort and attention is critical. Early identification and referral can significantly change a child’s learning experience.

Sound Storm is used by audiologists as part of an evidence-based approach to support children with identified spatial processing difficulties.

Pittwater Hearing today visited Bilgola Plateau Public School to conduct hearing screenings. It’s fantastic that this primary school invests in this program to help their kindy kids off to a flying start to school.

Did you know that 30% of primary school kids will experience hearing difficulties at some point in time? This is normally due to middle ear pathology, but can have a massive impact on learning.

Abigail, Emma and Jessica are back in the clinic today after 2 days spent at Audiology Australia’s Sound Exchange.
Emma was a co-presenter at the “Listening Difficulties in Children” workshop that Abi attended.
Jessica has spent the last 2 days doing a deep-dive on Tinnitus, Hyperacusus and Mysophonia.
We will be bringing what we learnt back to the clinic and updating our protocols to reflect the latest research in these evolving fields.
