The residents of Yarrbat Place marked the coldest and wettest day of the year so far to welcome winter in the best possible way - sharing a delicious meal, great company, and plenty of conversation.
While guests enjoyed the warm atmosphere, Chef Shaun and Food Service team member Hannah worked behind the scenes in the Melosi kitchen to create a wonderful three-course winter feast featuring:
🥣 Seafood chowder with crusty bread
🥘 Beef Bourguignon with mash, braised onions, green beans and carrots

Paws, play and plenty of walkies are all part of life at Yarrbat Place, thanks to local dog walker Claire and her happy pack of furry companions. 🐾

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Claire heads out with a group of excited village pooches for their regular walks around the neighbourhood. What started as helping one resident walk her dog while recovering from surgery has grown into a much-loved service for several Yarrbat Place residents and their furry friends.

A Surrey Hills resident, Claire describes herself as someone who loves all creatures with “four legs and fur”. At home, she is mum to her own fur babies, a dog Ritchie and a cat Tolstoy - and these days, often a few extra furry visitors as well.

From group walks to pet sitting while residents travel or recover from medical procedures, Claire has become a trusted helping hand, bringing companionship, exercise and plenty of tail-wagging excitement along the way.

“I just love having furry friends around me,” Claire says. “And it keeps me fit doing the regular walks.”

🇦🇺 National Reconciliation Week is a meaningful time for Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements.

This year’s theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is not passive. It grows through listening, learning and taking part in ways that build respect and understanding.

Locally, the City of Boroondara has shared several ways to get involved, including Wurundjeri Storytime online, the Slow Read exhibition at Town Hall Gallery, Reconciliation at Hawthorn and Aboriginal Cultural Competency training.

✨🎤 Local Balwyn resident Matthew Etty-Leal was recently a guest speaker at Yarrbat Place, where he delivered a fascinating and entertaining presentation on the life and many alter-egos of legendary Australian performer Barry Humphries.

Matthew shared stories behind Humphries’ iconic characters including Dame Edna Everage, Sandy Stone and Sir Les Patterson, while also exploring his career as an artist, author, satirist and comedian. Guests particularly enjoyed hearing personal insights sourced through Matthew’s friendship with Barry Humphries’ sister, Barbara Johnson.

With more than 500 presentations delivered across Boroondara to organisations including U3A groups, retirement villages, seniors clubs, Probus and Rotary clubs, Matthew continues to delight audiences with his remarkable knowledge of people, places and history.

A wonderful afternoon of laughter, memories and Australian cultural history was enjoyed by all who attended. Matthew was thanked for his presentation by Yarrbat residents, David, Marilyn and Paul.
