Some autistic people learn to mask autistic traits early in life to meet their need for safety, acceptance and connection in neurotypical environments (like school!)

Imagine if belonging didn’t require changing who you are. 💛

One way we can support this is by helping autistic children and young people find communities that celebrate their interests, strengths and passions.

For many, that might be groups centred around:
✨ Collecting
🎨 Art and craft
🎸 Music
⚽ Sport
🧱 LEGO
🎭 Drama
🦄 Animals
🎮 Gaming

The goal isn’t to help children fit in; it’s to help them find places where they feel safe, valued and free to be themselves.

📚Books are such a useful therapeutic resource and one of our current favourites is Sandhya Menon’s ‘My Body’s Power Pack’.

This book (and the cards that go with it) provide a simple, engaging way to introduce concepts like pacing, energy management and recognising when our body’s “power pack” might need recharging.👌

It’s become a go-to resource for many of our therapists and the families we support.

Would you like us to share more of our favourite therapy books? Let us know in the comments.

Creating a classroom that works for a whole class of learners isn’t always easy 💛

Every day, teachers are balancing different strengths, needs, interests and ways of learning. Often all at the same time.

That’s why we wanted to share some practical inclusive classroom ideas from our OT Sam (who also happens to be a former teacher 🤫).

Sometimes the smallest adjustments can make the biggest difference to participation, confidence and belonging.

Teachers, we’d love to hear from you 👇
What’s one thing you’ve done in your classroom that has helped more students succeed?

Clear is kind 💛

Sporting coaches and volunteers play such an important role in building community.

Often, parents want to help. They just need clarity around how they can contribute positively.

Clear, transparent communication helps create calmer, safer and more connected environments for everyone. And when people know the role they can play, they’re far more likely to step into it.

What’s something that helps create a positive culture in your club or team?

✨Creativity. Connection. Community. ✨

One of our therapists recently visited the Exhibition of Tiny Art in Inverleigh and came back feeling totally inspired by the creativity, reflection and sense of community!🖼️

There was some incredible work from local artists and we also loved the quotes from and about creativity and connection with community.

It’s left us thinking about the similarities between creativity and our therapy sessions, and small moments of creativity we can continue to bring into our work with children, families and community. ✨

✨Highlights from the Intellectual Disability in Education Summit in Melbourne last week!✨

One of the biggest takeaways from the speakers was that inclusion is not about “fitting” students into existing systems. It’s about rethinking environments, expectations and opportunities through a strengths-based, disability-affirming lens grounded in Universal Design for Learning.👌

We heard so many nuggets of gold from Dr Paula Kluth, Rachel Carr and Amanda Corby - and Kath Mansour sharing her lived experience was such a powerful part of the day.

One line that has stayed with us: “Because my school included me, the other kids did too.” 💛

What’s one thing you think helps students feel genuinely included at school?

Speechie day out!👌

Lauri and Georgia recently headed to Melbourne for an energising PD day filled with movement, learning about speech sound disorders, great conversations and even better food. 🤤

We always 💛 love opportunities to keep evolving our knowledge so we can bring back fresh ideas to the families and communities we support.

Thanks to Adventures in Speech Pathology for hosting a meaningful day!

➡️More and more, social media is becoming the go-to place for parenting, wellbeing and therapy advice.

While it’s an incredible tool for accessible information and connection, it can also cause feelings of shame or judgement, especially when the information is inaccurate or if it’s simply not the right time for that message.

We’re sharing some reflective questions you can ask yourself when accessing info on social media.

We hope this helps you find relevant info that is both supportive and aligned with where you are on your journey right now.
