In the Southern Hemisphere the winter solstice falls on June 21/22 official timing is Sunday June 21st at 6.24pm.
The winter solstice is the day of the year that has the least daylight hours of any in the year, the one day of the year where the night is the longest before starting to become shorter, progressing back to light. It is known as the Festival of Light; when the darkest part of the year starts to recede.
Our ancestors were connected to the land and rejoiced at this time knowing that each day gets brighter, that deep within mother earth new life is growing ready to appear in the spring and bringing new life to the land.
The energy of winter in introverted and contracted. As the earth begins to die back it is a time for us to reflect on what is not working for us in our lives, any regrets we have, allow them to die back and let go therefore this season is about drawing back and re-evaluating and like Autumn planting the seeds to things we want to grow and bring to life.
Part of our learning and transformation is letting go of things we hang onto, we tend to stay with what is familiar to us even though they are not working for us.
This seasons impact on us makes many of us feel less motivated, unfit, chilly, little lazy, feeling low, a time where we withdraw. Seasons are reminders of the changes in our lives; we see the divine in nature and the connectedness between human and Mother Nature.
Winter is a reminder of the cycle of life and death and again the rebirth as land becomes barren, plants die into the ground, trees lose their leaves, animals hibernate or migrate.
Light a candle this evening and pay thanks for all that you have, let go of all that is no longer needed and plant those seeds of what you want to reap.
