Welcoming and supporting refugees this Refugee Week

This week we acknowledge both Refugee Week in Australia 15-21 June, and World Refugee Day 20 June.

Australia has welcomed more than one million people on permanent humanitarian visas from all parts of the globe, people who have helped shape our community. Refugee Week is a moment to reflect on their unique stories and positive impact.

World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees with the goal of ensuring refugees can not only survive but thrive.

True’s focus on access and equity guides our clinical, counselling, and education teams who do valuable work every day to engage, inform, and serve our refugee community. And we acknowledge there is more to be done.

Women’s health is shaped by access, equity and respect.

On International Day of Action for Women’s Health (May 28), we renew our commitment to removing barriers to sexual and reproductive healthcare and strengthening services that support women across Queensland.

This commitment has guided True for more than 50 years and continues to shape our future.

National Reconciliation Week (27 May–3 June) is a time to reflect on our shared history and the action we still need to take to make change. We acknowledge and honour the strength, knowledge and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This year’s theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day. At True, we continue our reconciliation journey and reaffirm our commitment to culturally responsive, respectful sexual and reproductive healthcare, and learning from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and voices.

It’s our responsibility to take action and encourage and support others to take action. One small step is to share First Nations-led and informed resources designed to support professionals and clinicians working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

These resources focus on strength, connection and culturally responsive practice, and are available to explore and use beyond National Reconciliation Week.

This clinic and others like them are so important, especially given the impact that endometriosis, pelvic pain and menopause can have on every aspect of women's lives.

If you’re living with endometriosis, pelvic pain or menopause symptoms, you might know how hard it can be to find the right support close to home.

We’ve opened a new Endometriosis, Pelvic Pain and Menopause Clinic in Rockhampton, bringing specialised women’s healthcare closer to home for people in Rockhampton and the surrounding region.

The clinic is delivered through True’s established Rockhampton clinic, expanding the specialised care available locally. It is designed to give people access to specialised expertise and the care they need, helping reduce long waits and long travel for specialist support.

Today (5 May) is International Day of the Midwife, a chance to recognise a profession often associated with labour and birth, but whose work reaches far beyond the delivery suite.

At True Relationships and Reproductive Health, Helen Crabtree‑Spencer, midwife and Clinic Nurse Manager at our Toowoomba Clinic, reflected on that broader picture.

Helen’s career spans nursing, midwifery, international hospital practice and more than two decades in sexual and reproductive healthcare with True. Her experience is a reminder that midwifery brings a depth of clinical judgement, adaptability and care that supports people across many stages of life.

To mark International Day of the Midwife, we’re sharing Helen’s story and celebrating the contribution of midwifery to communities everywhere.

When clinicians feel supported, communities benefit too.

A perfect example of this can be found in the March graduation of 15 Queensland clinicians from nationally recognised sexual and reproductive health care training, delivered by True.

Across the three-day training, the 15 clinicians built their skills and confidence in sexual and reproductive health care, including contraception, STI management and pregnancy options counselling.

Led by Dr Vanessa Siu and Dr Leilani Corbett the sessions were full of open conversations, shared learning and practical insights.

True is the only provider accredited in Queensland to deliver Sexual and Reproductive Health Australia (SRHA)’s National Certificate for Doctors and Nurse Practitioners.
