Did you know that when you tell your children "don't hit", "don't shout" etc, their brain does not register the don't as well as it does the word following it and it almost becomes a reminder of what they shouldn't be doing.

A better approach can be to tell them what kind of behaviour we do want to see. E.g. "Remember you need to be gentle", "remember we use quiet voices in here", "remember to hold my hand and to only look at the things on the shelves".

This helps their brains to remember what we want them to be doing, rather than what they shouldn't be doing.

You are enough. You are doing enough, caring enough and being enough.

It is so easy these days to feel like we are not doing enough as parents. The messages come from everywhere. Constant reminders to be there every waking second for our children.

The truth is children also need to learn that their needs won't always come first, that it's OK for them to not always get what they want, that they can be patient and wait, that they can entertain themselves.

So let go of that guilt. You ARE ENOUGH x

Children learn how to calm themselves through repeated co-regulation from adults.

They need us to be calm first before we can help them to be calm.

They need us to show them how to be calm and not just how to shut their emotions away.

This is just one of the many things we teach parents how to do here at Ocean Grace. If this is something you would like to learn how to do, book in now for your consultation session.

Everyone's children do these things at some point in their childhoods, it is a natural, healthy part of growing up. Our role is to guide them and model for them as best we can.

We carry a quiet, persistent anxiety that a perfectly raised child is a person who never causes a disruption, never loses their temper, and never pushes against a limit.

When the afternoon completely ununravels and we are met with a loud standoff or a tearful collapse, our automatic adult instinct is to internalize that friction as a total parenting failure.

We assume that if we were just a little more patient, used better strategies, or ran a more disciplined house, these messy moments wouldn't be happening. We treat normal human development like a behavioral emergency that we need to immediately suppress.

But however good a parent you choose to be, this stuff is going to happen.

The resistance, the noise, and the testing of walls are not proof that your home is broken; they are the literal signs that a child's nervous system is growing. In fact, it is entirely healthy that they are pushing back.

A child who feels safe enough to express their raw frustration, ask the heavy questions, and test the boundaries under your roof is a child who knows your warmth is not a conditional reward for their perfection.

Our job isn't to build an environment where these storms never occur, but to make sure they stay normal when they do.

That means dropping the exhausting performance metrics and focusing entirely on helping them learn how to hold their own big feelings. When you step back from your own adult panic and realize that their behavior isn't an attack on your authority, you can finally intervene appropriately.

Be the steady, predictable anchor who guides them through the fire with quiet composure; because true parenting isn't about eliminating the friction of growing up — it is about ensuring they always have a secure harbor to land in while they figure it all out. ❤️

There are many families raising their children away from immediate family supports or the useful information that can get passed down the generations.

This can not only be isolating but it also means that they are missing out on the incredible reassurance that comes from hearing about what is "normal" in child development.

If you are experiencing this, please reach out and ask for support from us here at Ocean Grace.

We are not designed to raise our children in isolation from each other. Find out what supports we have available to help your family.

It is a sign of strength and wisdom to be able to seek the support you need for your family.
