People of all ages deserve respect. 👴👵
The United Nations have declared that the 15th of June each year is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Tragically, elder abuse is widespread and takes many different forms. It occurs when someone causes harm or distress to an older person, including instances of financial abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.
❗In a recent survey, it was reported that around 1 in 6 people over the age of 65 had experienced at least one incident of elder abuse in the previous year. Two in three people who experience elder abuse do not seek help. And in half of the reported cases of elder abuse, the perpetrator was a family member.
🛑✋ Together, we can stop elder abuse.
If you are experiencing elder abuse, you can call the Australian Human Rights Commission on 1800 353 374 or visit: https://humanrights.gov.au/elderabuse. In an emergency, call 000.
