💛💙 TODAY IN CHARLEVILLE — COME ALONG & CONNECT

Today is a big day for connection in our community.

💛 This morning:
R U OK? Day Pancake Breakfast
7am–9am | Town Hall Park
Wear yellow, grab a pancake and take a moment to check in with someone.

💙 This afternoon:
Out of the Shadows Walk
3pm–7pm | Graham Andrews Park
Wear blue, come together, remember those we have lost to su***de and show your support for those affected.

Two events. Two opportunities to show up, connect and care.

And that's really what this week has been about.

Women’s Health Week has reminded us to Fuel. Move. Rest. Breathe. Connect.

Today, we're putting that last one into action.

Connect with someone.
Start a conversation.
Join the community.
You never know what difference showing up might make. 💛💙

We’ll see you around town.

💛 DO IT ANYWAY — CHARLEVILLE STYLE

Women’s Health Week reminds us that looking after ourselves isn’t just about appointments and check-ups.

It’s also about moving, resting, breathing, having fun and connecting with other people.

And the great thing about living in a community like Charleville?

There are so many ways to do it.

☕ Meet a friend for coffee.
🎨 Join an art group.
🏃‍♀️ Head along to parkrun.
🎣 Get out fishing.
🧘‍♀️ Try Pilates.
💪 Join a fitness class.
🚶‍♀️ Go for a walk.
💛 Come along to the R U OK? Day Pancake Breakfast.
💙 Join the Out of the Shadows Walk.
🩺 And when it’s time to look after the health things you’ve been putting off — we’re here to help with that, too.

Because wellbeing doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

It might be movement for one person, creativity for another.
Connection for one, quiet time for another.

Find what fills your cup. Find what makes you feel like you. And do it anyway. 💛

This Women’s Health Week, let’s celebrate the many ways our community helps us look after ourselves — and each other.

💛 WOMEN’S HEALTH WEEK | DO IT ANYWAY

This Women’s Health Week, the message is simple: Do it anyway.

Fuel your body.
Move your body.
Rest.
Breathe.
Connect.

Not perfectly. Not all at once. Just in the ways that work for you.

Maybe it’s making a healthier choice when you can.
Going for the walk.
Getting an early night.
Taking five minutes to breathe.
Calling a friend.
Booking the appointment you’ve been putting off.

Women’s health is about more than what happens in a consulting room. It’s about the everyday things that support our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, too.

So this week, what’s one small thing you can do anyway — for you?💛

💚 What we don’t want you to worry about when you come to ACP

You don’t need to have all the answers.

It’s okay if you forget what you wanted to ask.
It’s okay if you’re nervous or embarrassed.
It’s okay to ask questions — even if you think they’re silly.
It’s okay to say, “I don’t understand.”
And it’s okay to tell us if something makes you uncomfortable.

You don’t need to know all the right words or have everything figured out before you walk through our doors.

Our job isn’t just to treat your health — it’s to listen, explain and support you without judgement.

Come as you are. We’ll take it from there. 💚

Coffee & Conversation with Dr Paul ☕️

Myth or Medicine? 🤔

We asked Dr Paul to settle a few of those health myths we've all heard over the years...

🌱 MYTH: Swallowing watermelon seeds means you'll grow a watermelon in your tummy.
FACT: Nope. 😂

💉 MYTH: You can get the flu from the flu vaccine.
FACT: No! Flu vaccines use inactivated virus, parts of the virus, or other non-infectious components to stimulate your immune system. They cannot cause influenza infection.

💧 MYTH: It's fine not to drink water.
FACT: Nope. Your body needs water to function — and severe dehydration can be life-threatening.

💊 MYTH: All over-the-counter supplements are safe because they're "natural".
FACT: Not necessarily. Supplements can have side effects, interact with medications and, when taken in excessive amounts, can cause toxicity or overdose.

🩺 MYTH: Prostate screening always includes a DRE.
FACT: NO, NO IT DOES NOT! 😂
A digital re**al examination (DRE) is not a stand-alone screening test for prostate cancer and can miss cancers, particularly early-stage cancers. Your GP can talk you through the appropriate screening options for you.

And finally...

🍬 MYTH: Swallowing chewing gum means it stays in your stomach for seven years.
FACT: Nope. 😂 Your body can't digest the gum, but it passes through your digestive system and eventually leaves the body.

Turns out, not everything our parents told us was true! 😉

☕️ Got a health myth you're not sure about? Send it our way — Dr Paul might settle it over coffee.

Meet Menchu! 👋🌿

We’re delighted to welcome Menchu to the Acacia Country Practice team as our newest Registered Nurse.

Menchu began her nursing journey in the Philippines before moving to New Zealand and eventually making Australia home.

Her connection with Charleville began in 2012, when she came to town for a 10-month stint at Waroona. That year was particularly special as she also took her pledge of Australian citizenship right here in Charleville. After returning in 2014, Menchu decided to make our community her permanent home.

Since then, she has worked across a range of nursing roles, including many years at Waroona and, more recently, with CWAATSICH. She brings a wealth of experience, with particular interests in health promotion, quality improvement, infection prevention and control, medication management and wound care. After more than 30 years in nursing, she can’t imagine herself doing anything else.

Most importantly, Menchu is passionate about helping patients achieve better health outcomes — and she’s looking forward to getting to know our patients, being of service and having a good yarn and a laugh along the way!

Outside of nursing, family is at the heart of Menchu’s life. She loves spending time with her husband and daughter, and they enjoy doing just about everything together — from cooking and gardening to grocery shopping, karaoke and Zumba!

We’re so pleased to have Menchu join the ACP family and look forward to the experience, warmth and care she will bring to our team and our patients.

Welcome to ACP, Menchu! 💚

💙 A little heads-up for Dr Paul’s regular patients

Dr Paul will be taking some well-earned leave in September, so if you’re one of his regular patients and have something you’d like to see him about, we encourage you to plan ahead and book your appointment early.

We know that continuity of care matters, and we understand that some patients prefer to see the doctor who knows them and their history. 💙

While Dr Paul is away, the ACP team will be here to support you, with Dr Andy, Dr Kate, Dr Katie and Dr Kas (telehealth) available to care for our patients.
And besides… doctors need to look after doctors too! 😉

We’ll make sure Dr Paul gets a proper chance to recharge, and we’ll look forward to having him back refreshed and ready to go.

If you think you’ll need an appointment with Dr Paul before his leave, now is a good time to book ahead.

❤️ Hearts of the Community | YaYa

Every community has people who help make others feel seen, heard and like they belong.

For our first Hearts of the Community, we’re introducing you to YaYa — a Police Liaison Officer with the Queensland Police Service here in Charleville.

Seven years ago, YaYa arrived in Australia from Taiwan. She first found her place in Charleville through jobs at the meat works, the IGA deli and, for five years, behind the coffee machine at the local bakery.

What has kept her here is the genuine warmth of the community and the way people look out for one another.

Whether it’s crossing paths at the supermarket, chatting with familiar faces at the local shops or simply walking down the street, YaYa says there’s a strong sense of interconnectedness in Charleville.

“Charleville has a unique way of making you feel seen and valued.”

Today, she’s helping build those connections in a very different role — working as a bridge between police and our culturally diverse community, while also helping run a weekly English class at the Neighbourhood Centre.

What makes her story particularly special is that she understands the journey herself.

When YaYa first arrived, English was a challenge. She would write down new words while working at the IGA so she could practice them after work.

Now, communication and helping others overcome language barriers are at the heart of what she does.

“I am most proud of being able to turn my own past struggles into a way to help others.”

That feels like the heart of community to us. 💚

Thank you, YaYa, for the role you play in helping people feel safe, heard and connected.

"Home is where you feel safe enough to be yourself, understood without always needing the perfect words, and surrounded by people who support your growth."
