ANMF NT stands with nursing and midwifery colleagues across Australia in saying: "Australia needs care you can count on."

We are calling on NT Health, the Northern Territory Government, and all aged care providers to work together for real change in aged care.

Our workforce cares for Territorians every day. If we don't look after our staff now, who will be there to care for them when it's their turn to need support? The future of aged care depends on the actions we take today.

Australia’s largest union has unveiled a major national aged care campaign, calling on the Federal Government to address the deepening aged care crisis.

Launching ‘Australia needs care you can count on’ at Parliament House today, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF)is calling on the federal government to deliver urgent reforms in the aged care sector, including mandated staffing ratios.

The campaign follows the ANMF’s recent national survey of frontline aged care workers, which found the sector was still experiencing systemic understaffing, increased workplace violence, cost-cutting and a lack of transparency for billions of dollars in taxpayer funding.

The horrific magnitude of the floods in Nepal on 26 August is difficult to comprehend, even with the devastating video and images.

Many of the communities hit by the wall of water last week were also devastated by the 2015 earthquake that killed almost 9000 people, injured countless and left millions homeless. The humanitarian crisis that followed lasted years, meaning these communities had barely recovered. To be so catastrophically affected again is heartbreaking.

We are thinking of our Nepalese members and colleagues who are anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones, and the nurses and midwives caring for patients under horrific circumstances.

This week the Branch Executive Council authorised a donation of $10,000 to Emergency Action Alliance – a collective of 15 key Australian aid organisations who have pooled their reach and resources to provide disaster response around the world.

Doctors and nurses demand urgent 'Code Yellow' declaration at Royal Darwin Hospital amid ongoing crisis.

The Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation (ASMOF) NT and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) NT have issued a joint media statement warning that Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) remains in a dangerous "state of disaster," placing Territorians at immediate risk of harm.

The unions representing the Territory's doctors and nurses are calling on NT Health to immediately declare a Code Yellow and maintain it until normal, safe operating conditions are sustainably restored.

Frontline healthcare professionals remain dedicated to treating and caring for patients to the best of their ability, but they warn that the current systemic failures are creating an entirely unsafe environment for both staff and patients.

"Every Territorian should be angry at the state of our health service," said Dr Thomas Fowles, President of ASMOF NT and Vice President of AMA NT.

"Katherine floods, Alice can’t get enough nurses or doctors, and Darwin is literally falling down when there's a stiff breeze. I’m sure the politicians will talk about record spending – this is how inflation works! Record spending means nothing when the spending is still inadequate."

“Nurses are sounding really defeated. They no longer expect things to improve in any meaningful way” said Heidi Crisp, Secretary of ANMF NT.

One nurse expressed the sentiment: “People are too poor and too sick in this town, we shall never get out of Code Yellow.”

The joint statement highlights a broader collapse across the Northern Territory's healthcare network, pointing to infrastructure vulnerability in Darwin and critical staffing shortages in Alice Springs. Frontline medical workers emphasise that immediate structural intervention and honest funding assessments are required to protect the health and safety of the Northern Territory public.
