What is Gua Sha (and why you actually need it) (2).pdf
It looks dramatic. It feels incredible. Here's the 2,000-year-old technique we swear by at Cocoon 🌿
Most people have no idea what gua sha actually does to the body β€” so we broke it down, slide by slide. Spoiler: that redness is your body waking up, not something to worry about.
Ask us about adding gua sha to your next session πŸ‘‡

One of the most common questions we get is: β€œHow many acupuncture sessions will I need?”
The honest answer is, it depends on what your body is dealing with, how long it has been going on, and how your system responds to treatment.
A recent injury, acute muscle spasm, stress flare, or short-term issue may respond quite quickly. Many people notice changes within the first few sessions.
Long-standing conditions are different.
Chronic pain, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, anxiety, sleep problems, and fatigue patterns often develop over months or years. These cases usually need a more consistent treatment phase to create lasting change.
Acupuncture works by influencing the nervous system, circulation, inflammation, muscle tension, and the body’s own regulatory processes. Like exercise or rehabilitation, consistency matters.
A common approach may look like:
β€’ Weekly treatments initially
β€’ Reassessment after several sessions
β€’ Gradually spacing appointments further apart as symptoms improve
β€’ Maintenance sessions to help stay well and manage stress before it builds again
The goal is not endless treatment. The goal is helping your body regain stability, resilience, and function.
Every treatment plan is individual, because every person is individual.

Acupuncture is often explained through traditional Chinese medicine concepts like Qi and meridians, but modern research has also identified measurable physiological effects throughout the body.
Here are some of the ways acupuncture may work from a biomedical perspective:
β€’ Nervous system regulation
Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves in the skin and muscles, helping influence the autonomic nervous system. This may assist with shifting the body from a constant β€œfight or flight” state toward a calmer parasympathetic response.
β€’ Reduced inflammation
Research suggests acupuncture can influence inflammatory pathways and chemical messengers within the body, helping modulate inflammatory responses linked to pain and chronic conditions.
β€’ Stress response regulation
Acupuncture may affect areas of the brain involved in stress, mood, and emotional regulation, while also influencing cortisol and other stress-related hormones.
β€’ Improved blood circulation
Needling can increase local microcirculation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues and supporting healing processes.
β€’ Lymphatic support
By influencing circulation and muscle tension, acupuncture may help support lymphatic movement and fluid drainage.
β€’ Fertility support
Research has explored acupuncture’s role in supporting reproductive health through effects on stress regulation, blood flow to reproductive organs, hormone balance, and nervous system function.
Ancient medicine, modern research, real physiological effects.
