Seekers Places x TERRAIN
TERRAIN is a bookshop, gallery and studio on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, and Australia's first ecologically-oriented space of its kind.
It's the vision of founder and new friend of Seekers, Cristina Napoleone, whose background in environmental geography led her to build a place where ecological ideas could live outside academia and into everyday life. What started as a one-off concept at the NGV Art Book Fair in 2020 has grown into Melbourne's home for ecological and more-than-human literature.
TERRAIN's hand-sourced collection spans over 400 local and international publishers, organised into 14 unique categories including Earth, Water, Technology, Spirituality and Fiction. Every book on the shelf engages in dialogue across ecology, technology and culture, offering ways to imagine our place within one planetary ecosystem.
TERRAIN is staffed by warm and welcoming people who have real expertise in these fields, so it functions akin to a library rather than a typical shop. Beyond browsing for books, the space hosts talks, launches, screenings and workshops, making it as much a gathering point as a bookshop.
Equal parts considered and community-minded, TERRAIN is a must-visit for anyone curious about how we live alongside the natural world. Head to Brunswick Street, Fitzroy to experience the space first-hand.
A final nod to the bespoke design details found inside, from the algae-based bioplastic modular blinds made in collaboration with Other Matter, to the aluminium bookshelves and seating by Old Four Legs, the mycelium lights by Josh Riesel, and the recycled HDPE desk and kitchen surfaces by Defy Design.
