It’s National Volunteer Week 2026 (18–24 May) and this year’s theme — Your Year to Volunteer — feels very close to my heart.

Volunteering has given me so much more than I ever expected to give in return. So I wanted to take a moment to share why I do it — and why I keep saying yes.

🚑 Street Side Medics
I started volunteering with Street Side Medics because I believe everyone deserves access to care, regardless of where they sleep at night. Showing up as part of a medical team and a willingness to listen — for people who might otherwise go without — is one of the most grounding things I do. It’s a reminder of what really matters.

👩‍💼 Hunter Business Women’s Network (Committee Member)
More recently, I stepped into a committee role with the Hunter Business Women’s Network — and it has been such a privilege. Supporting a community of women who are building businesses, navigating challenges, and lifting each other up? That’s exactly the kind of work I want to be part of. Behind every event and connection is a team of volunteers making it happen.

Two very different roles. The same core reason: community.

Excited to be at the Primary Health Network Allied Health Conference on the Central Coast today! What a fantastic program ahead — covering everything from diabetes lower limb care and virtual allied health placements, to family-centred care, FND therapy, multidisciplinary collaboration, and even cyber security for health practices.
A special shoutout to Nicola Callender — the only podiatrist on the program today! Nicola will be speaking on Building Workforce Capacity and Equity in Diabetes Lower Limb Care, and I can’t wait to hear her represent our profession on the big stage. So great to see podiatry at the table.
Looking forward to a day of learning, connecting, and coming away inspired. Watch this space!

Federal Budget 2026–27 — What It Means for Veteran Foot Health.

The Australian Government has committed $169.7 million over five years to increase allied health provider fees for Veteran Card holders, taking effect from 1 July 2027. Podiatry is included in this investment.
For too long, outdated fee schedules have made it difficult for podiatry clinics to continue seeing DVA patients. This funding addresses that directly — meaning veterans should have access to a wider choice of providers and shorter wait times for care.

A few key points worth knowing:
* Veteran Gold and White Card holders are not charged gap fees for podiatry treatment.
* From 1 July 2027, a $5,000 annual limit will apply across all allied health services, so planning your care across the year is worthwhile.

If you hold a DVA Gold or White Card and are unsure what podiatry services you are entitled to, contact our clinic. We are an approved DVA provider and are here to help you understand and access your entitlements.
