Can you spot the difference between Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology?

While they each bring their own unique skills and areas of expertise, you'll often see our Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists working alongside one another to support the same child.

That's because every child is different, and so are their strengths, goals and support needs. Some children may benefit from Occupational Therapy, some from Speech Pathology, and some from a collaborative approach where both clinicians work together towards shared goals.

By combining our expertise, we can build a more complete understanding of how a child communicates, plays, learns, regulates, participates in daily activities and engages with the people and environments around them. Working together also allows us to develop strategies that are consistent, meaningful and tailored to each child's unique way of experiencing the world.

At SPOT, collaboration is a big part of how we work. Whether that's through joint sessions, shared planning or ongoing conversations between clinicians and teachers, caregivers and educators, our focus is always on providing the right support for each child and family.

If you'd like to learn more about Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology or whether either service may be helpful for your child, we'd love to chat.

There has been a lot of discussion recently about **Thriving Kids**, the Australian Government's new early childhood support pathway set to begin rolling out from **1 October 2026**.

While many of the finer details are still emerging, we now have a clearer picture of the direction these changes are taking.

Thriving Kids is expected to support children aged 8 years and under with developmental delay and/or autism who have low to moderate support needs, while children with permanent and significant disability, including those with high support needs, are expected to remain eligible for the NDIS.

The proposed model places a stronger focus on providing support earlier, building the capacity of families, increasing access to community-based supports and creating greater clarity around who the NDIS is intended to support.

We know many families are wondering what these changes may mean for their child. As more information becomes available, we'll continue to share updates and explain what they mean in practical terms, so you can feel informed and supported every step of the way.

If you have questions about your child's supports or would like to discuss what these changes could mean for your family, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Last week we had the pleasure of attending one of our Preschool Boost sites to deliver a parent education session on noticing the early signs of language or speech differences. Together, we shared practical strategies, helpful resources and information to support children's communication development at home. We really value these opportunities to support caregivers, providing them with the knowledge and tools to feel confident on their journey.

We also love partnering with early learning services to support children within their everyday environments. Whether it's educator coaching, parent education sessions or practical strategies to support regulation, language, speech, communication, mealtimes, self-care or motor skill development, we'd love to work alongside your team.

If you're a parent with questions about your child's development, or an early learning service interested in learning more about Preschool Boost and the supports we can provide, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Our July School Holiday Kids in the Kitchen Cooking Groups were a wonderful reminder of how meaningful learning can happen through everyday experiences.

Together, children prepared pancakes and fruit skewers while developing communication, social connection, fine motor and daily living skills in a fun, supportive environment. There was plenty of mixing, chopping, teamwork, conversation and, of course, a little bit of mess along the way.

These groups also reflected many of the principles that underpin our mealtime supports at SPOT. Cooking can provide opportunities to explore food in a low-pressure, supportive way, helping children build confidence, develop new skills and create positive experiences around food at their own pace.

We know that every child's relationship with food is unique. That's why our approach is neuro-affirming, relationship-based and tailored to each child's individual strengths, preferences and support needs, while partnering with families to make mealtimes feel more positive and enjoyable.

Thank you to all of the children and families who joined us over the school holidays. We loved having you in the kitchen.

If you are interested in learning more about what mealtime supports can look like for your family, please don't hesitate to reach out to learn more.

At SPOT, we believe early intervention is about the way we support families with what matters most right now.

Some of the most meaningful progress happens in the everyday moments between appointments, which is why supporting parents, caregivers and educators is such an important part of our approach.

We work alongside families to build confidence and share practical strategies that can be naturally embedded into daily routines, whether that's at home, childcare, preschool or school.

By tailoring supports to each child's strengths, interests and everyday environments, we can help create opportunities for learning, communication and participation throughout the day.

We connect with educators through observations, phone calls and emails, and participation in Team Around the Child meetings to build a picture of, and allow us to better understand each child's individual environments and provide support and information that is meaningful, practical and relevant to their daily experiences.

Early intervention is most effective when the people around a child feel supported too, and we're proud to partner with families and educators every step of the way.

We always take the time each year to put aside a day at the start and middle of the year to come together.

Last week we spent the day talking about how we stay steady through change: strengthening best practice, supporting families and shaping what comes next.

For our team, best practice, evidence-informed therapy, and supporting our families is such an important part of what we do. We know there are changes coming and today we chose to think about what we are going to protect as a core part of our service, adapt, learn and systemise.

We spent the morning engaged in thoughtful discussion, and took the afternoon to reflect on how we stay steady as individuals and prioritise self-leadership, finishing off the day with a pottery session !

A jam-packed day filled with connection, reflection, and planning!

When we think about supporting children, it's important to remember that siblings are part of the journey too.

Growing up alongside a sibling with additional support needs can bring many positive experiences, including empathy, resilience and strong family connections. It can also come with unique questions, emotions and experiences that deserve to be recognised and supported.

Siblings Australia is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the siblings of children and adults with disability, chronic illness and neurodivergence. Through resources, workshops and peer support, they provide opportunities for siblings to feel heard, understood and connected with others who share similar experiences.

Supporting one child means supporting the whole family, and making space for siblings is an important part of that. Organisations like Siblings Australia play an important role in ensuring siblings have access to support, connection and resources designed with their experiences in mind.

Communication is so much more than the words we use. It can include gestures, visuals, body language, facial expressions, movement, sounds, AAC, pointing, writing, drawing and many other ways of sharing how we feel, what we need and what matters to us.

In therapy, we often use visual supports to give children of all communication abilities another way to share how their body feels, what they might be experiencing and what support may help them in that moment.

Visual supports can be helpful for many children, by reducing the pressure to rely only on spoken language and offering another meaningful way to participate. Instead of expecting every child to communicate in the same way, these tools recognise and respect different communication styles.

At SPOT, we know there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The supports we use are tailored to each child’s strengths, preferences and ways of engaging, helping children build skills in ways that feel meaningful, empowering and supportive.
