My job is to advocate and educate! 🫶🏼

On Wednesday night, my partner and I attended the Tailem Bend community meeting about the AI data centre that is going to be built there. It was a great turnout, with community raised concerns about water, power, noise, pollution, and the impacts on animals and the environment.

From our understanding, this one data centre will use around 14 million litres of water per year and require around 1.4 gigawatts of power, approximately 1.5 times Adelaide’s current power usage. Another is planned for Port Augusta, with potentially more to come. The facility will take up around 800 acres, which is about 400 football ovals. With additional solar and wind infrastructure to generate more than they need.

What surprised me was that very little discussion was had about what this technology is actually being built for. It was briefly described as powering things like ChatGPT, and most responses to community questions were simply, “We will consider that in our planning.”

I asked what this AI is ultimately intended for and who will be accountable if the technology causes harm or develops in ways we don’t want. No clear answer was given.

AI has incredible potential if developed responsibly and properly regulated. But these projects are being classified as essential infrastructure and are being rolled out at an enormous scale. This is about much more than using AI to make our lives a little easier.

Many people aren’t even aware these centres are being built. I believe the public has a right to be informed and to have a voice in decisions that will shape our future. Although this project is in Tailem Bend, its impacts won’t stop at the town’s boundaries.

Please do your own research, ask questions, and get involved. Whether you’re excited about AI or concerned about it, we should all have a say in where this technology is taking us.

*Picture is not of the actual facility, it’s just to give you an idea of the large scale of these buildings.

⚠️Trigger Warning: Animal Cruelty

Over the weekend I came across something that completely broke my heart.

I watched a post about a group of activists who rescued dozens of Beagles from an animal testing facility. Until then, I was ignorant to the reality of what still happens. It simply wasn’t something that had ever crossed my path.

Since then, I’ve spent hours reading and watching footage, with some tears 😞

Beagles are commonly used in testing facilities because they are gentle, trusting dogs that are unlikely to bite, even when frightened or restrained. They can be subjected to toxicology testing, where chemicals are administered by injection, inhalation or through tubes placed into their stomachs. They may be restrained for long periods while researchers observe the effects. It is difficult to comprehend the suffering these animals endure.

What has also shocked me is that the 55 activists involved in rescuing some of these dogs are now facing severe legal consequences, including substantial fines and, for some, lengthy prison sentences. Meanwhile, the companies carrying out the breeding and testing continue operating within the law.

I also discovered that many animal experiments do not successfully predict how treatments or chemicals will affect humans. Modern alternatives, including human cell-based testing and advanced computer models, are becoming increasingly available, yet animal testing continues in many areas, including here in Australia. In Australia it is estimated that hundreds of thousands to millions of animals will die in animal testing including dogs, pigs, sheep and monkeys.

These animals have no voice. They cannot tell us they are scared or in pain. We can be their voice.

Please take a moment to:

🐾 Follow Save The Dogs UK on Facebook and Instagram to learn more.
🐾 Share their posts so more people become aware.
🐾 Download the Cruelty Cutter app to help identify products linked to animal testing.
🐾 check out the activists that saved 1500 beagles from Ridglan farms, who have now surrendered there breeding license.

If you’re feeling powerless, remember this:

Every purchase is a vote for the kind of world you want to support.

Together, our voices and our choices can help create change for those who have none.

Please share this post. Awareness is where change begins. ❤️🐶

A few gentle movement ideas that may help after school:
🌿 Outdoor play
🛴 Scooter or bike rides
🎵 Dance breaks
🧘 Stretching
⚽ Kicking a ball outside
💨 Heavy work activities like carrying or pushing

Movement can help support regulation, emotional release, and transitions after a busy day.

Every child is different — the goal isn’t perfection, it’s support 🤍
