Kids do well when they can. I love this quote by Dr Ross Greene.

It’s so important to understand that our kids ARE capable - but being capable and having capacity aren’t always the same thing. 💛

When kids are overwhelmed, tired, anxious or dysregulated, the skills they have can become much harder to access.

A little reminder to look beyond “they won’t” and wonder instead, “can they, right now?”

A little waitlist update from Play Out Loud 💛

I’ve made the decision to temporarily close my waitlist to new referrals.

I’m incredibly grateful for the trust families place in me, and all of the recommendations, professional referrals and word of mouth that have helped Play Out Loud grow. It really does mean so much 🥰

At the same time, that growth has meant my waitlist has become longer and longer, and I’ve reached a point where I no longer feel comfortable asking families who are looking for support now to join a list when I can’t give them a realistic idea of when I’ll be able to offer a space.

For families already on my waitlist, please don’t worry - nothing changes for you. Your little person will remain on the waitlist and keep their place, and I’ll continue working my way through the list and getting in touch as spaces become available.

2027 will bring new days, additional appointment times and more capacity for me to support families needing Play therapy in the northern suburbs.

Thank you, as always, for continuing to support Play Out Loud and for trusting me with your little people. I feel incredibly lucky to do the work that I do 💛

Just a little reminder of all the good things happening in our little ones’ brains when they PLAY 🧠✨

Through play, children are building and strengthening the brain pathways that support emotional regulation, flexible thinking, problem-solving, impulse control, communication and connection.

They’re experimenting with cause and effect.
Practising managing frustration.
Working through big feelings.
Trying out different solutions.
Building confidence through mastery.
Learning to read social cues and navigate relationships.

Play might be fun, but it’s also the work of childhood ❤️

Reflect feelings.

💛 Angry outbursts? Reflect feelings.
💛 Emotional dysregulation? Reflect feelings.
💛 Anxiety? Reflect feelings.
💛 Frustration? Reflect feelings.
💛 Perfectionism? Reflect feelings.
💛 Separation worries? Reflect feelings.
💛 Sibling conflict? Reflect feelings.
💛 Big emotions? Reflect feelings.

Reflecting feelings shows our little ones the we UNDERSTAND (even if we don’t agree).

When our children feel understood, we see:
✨ Less emotional intensity.
✨ Increased nervous system regulation.
✨ Stronger connection and trust.
✨ Greater emotional awareness.
✨ Better access to problem-solving.
✨ A growing emotional vocabulary.

The toys matter. The sand tray matters. The basketball hoop, trolley, miniatures and craft table all have their place.

But the most used resource in the playroom isn’t actually a toy…

It’s the therapeutic relationship ❤️

Because healing happens through CONNECTION. Through being seen, accepted, understood and trusted exactly as you are.

In Child-Centered play therapy, the relationship isn’t just part of the process - it is the process. 💚

A day where the world celebrates PLAY as much as Play Therapists do every day 🩷

Play is a child’s right. Play is what children need. Play is so much more than Play.
