Big news for Launceston! 🎉 We're thrilled to share that the first surgeries have now taken place in our new modular operating theatre at Calvary St Vincent’s Hospital and we couldn't be prouder.

This new theatre is a first for Tasmania, installed and ready in under five months, ensuring our community continues to have access to the surgical services they need.

A huge thank you to our amazing staff at Calvary St Vincent's Hospital and St Luke's Hospital, and to our partners Q-Bital and Erilyan, for making this possible.

On the second day of our visit to Launceston, we had the privilege of visiting Calvary St Luke’s Hospital, home to Melwood and Findlay Wards, and spending time with the dedicated team supporting palliative care in Northern Tasmania.

From the beautiful gardens to the bright, welcoming spaces, Calvary St Luke’s creates an environment that feels calm, comforting and deeply human. But what stood out most was the people. The warmth, kindness and genuine care shown by staff is what truly makes this place feel like home for so many.

We are sincerely grateful to the Calvary St Luke’s team for their warm welcome, generosity and for sharing their time, stories and insights with us. Special thanks to Tony Brennan, Director of Regional Pastoral Care, Edwin Vandervelde, Manager Pastoral Care and Mission, and Helen Miller, Nurse Unit Manager, for being part of these important conversations.

These reflections truly speak to this year’s National Palliative Care Week theme, Getting to the Heart of It: Big Questions, Real Answers 🧡

Thank you to the entire Calvary team for the compassion, dedication and care you provide to patients, families and the broader Northern Tasmanian community.

Happy International Nurses Day! 💙

We asked some of our incredible nurses, “What do you love most about being a nurse?”
Their answers are a powerful reminder of the compassion, connection, and care that nursing brings to people’s lives.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have dedicated nurses across all of our services delivering exceptional care to patients, families, and communities every day.

To all nurses, thank you for your kindness, strength, and unwavering commitment to caring for others.

“It takes a village.”

It’s an old saying, but when you look at what truly goes into a surgical procedure, it couldn’t be more accurate.

Over the weekend, Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Daniel Bunker shared a short video that captures this beautifully. Surgery isn’t just about the moment in the operating theatre. It’s the combined effort of countless people—each playing a vital role to ensure every patient’s experience is seamless, safe, and supported from start to finish.

His message is a reminder of the incredible teamwork behind the scenes. From our Reception and Bookings team, to our Theatre Nurses, to every staff member who contributes along the way—our people work tirelessly to make sure everything runs like clockwork.

Their dedication is the heartbeat of what we do. We’re grateful to Dr Bunker for allowing us to share his thoughts - click on the link below to watch:

World Hand Hygiene Day highlights the essential role of clean hands in safe, high‑quality healthcare.

At Calvary Launceston, we believe partnering with our consumers is essential, and one of the simple ways we support quality improvement initiatives is by providing an antibacterial wipe on each meal tray. It’s a small tool that empowers patients to clean their hands and contribute to a safer care environment.

Clean hands save lives — and together, we’re making every moment count!

Today, Calvary St Vincent’s and St Luke’s stand together in recognition of World Parkinson’s Day — a moment to honour every person living with Parkinson’s, their families, and the dedicated teams who walk beside them.

Patient‑focused care is at the heart of everything we do. Our clinicians, nurses, allied health teams and support staff work closely with each individual to understand their unique journey and ensure dignity, comfort and connection at every step.

Today we raise awareness, deepen understanding, and reaffirm our mission: to be there for those in our care, with empathy, respect and unwavering support.

Exciting times as the second theatre unit arrived on Sunday and was craned into place!

The works continue as the two units are finalised with their assembly and then connection. We are on track for our breakthrough of March 24th - which connects the two theatre units to St Vincent's main theatre complex. Once complete, they will undergo commissioning for safe operational use.

It's a major achievement for not only St Vincent's, but Tasmania also through having two of these theatre units in one location for surgical procedures.

Calvary staff were fortunate to receive training recently from Kaylene at Laerdal on our brand‑new Resus Anne simulator — an important investment in strengthening our clinical skills and ensuring we continue to deliver the highest standard of care.

Our training covered key areas including:

• Understanding the system components
• Simulator system and features
• Laerdal EcoSystem & Resources
• Theme Editor – Creating realistic simulations

Hands‑on learning like this is essential to keeping our team confident, prepared, and at the forefront of best practice. We’re excited to put our new knowledge into action, and look forward to future training sessions with Laerdal .

Calvary Launceston’s management team recently spent time with Alastair Lynch from Healthy Business for an engaging leadership session.

Together, they explored how lessons from elite sport can translate into strong leadership in the workplace, while also focusing on the importance of maintaining a healthy, holistic mindset at work.

Our frontline managers take part in these sessions regularly, helping them build the skills and resilience needed to navigate the everyday challenges of leadership.
