If you wear glasses, summer shouldn't mean choosing between seeing clearly and squinting.

Prescription sunnies give you both. Polarised lenses are a favourite around here for fishing, boating and beach days, because they cut the glare off the water so you can see what's going on. Our optometrist Tash knows this better than anyone. If there's a boat heading out, she's on it.

Depending on your fund, prescription sunnies may be covered by your optical extras too. Book a fitting before summer properly kicks in and we'll help you choose a pair.

Plenty of men know when the ute was last serviced, and have no idea when their eyes were last checked.

Many eye conditions develop slowly and without pain, which means they can be easy to miss on your own. A comprehensive eye exam looks at the health of the whole eye, not just how well you read the chart, and it's usually quicker and easier than people expect.

Eight weeks until Christmas, and the year is about to get very busy.

Before the school concerts and end-of-year catch-ups take over, here's a gentle reminder. Many health funds reset extras on 1 January, so if you haven't used your optical benefit yet, it could go towards new glasses, prescription sunnies or contact lenses. It's worth checking with your fund for your own limits and reset date.

We'll be counting down every Friday between now and Christmas. If you'd like to get in early, book online or give the team a call and we'll find a time that suits.

Bec started in optics as a trainee dispenser straight out of school. More than 20 years later, she co-owns Local Eyes with Kelly.

This Friday 30 October, Bec is speaking at Young Professionals Mackay's Good Company Dinner with Leaders. Her advice to anyone starting out has always been simple: work hard, and when you make a mistake, own it and fix it.

Your glasses work hard all day, and a few small habits help them last.

Taking them off with two hands, keeping them off the top of your head and out of a hot car all help frames hold their shape. When it comes to cleaning, a microfibre cloth and lens spray will always be kinder to your lenses than a shirt tail.
