Asking “R U OK?” is important. But what happens if the answer is no?
You don’t need to have the perfect response or know how to solve what they’re going through. Start by listening. Ask another question, give them space to talk and avoid rushing to offer advice.
When they’re ready, suggest one small next step you can take together. That could mean sitting with them while they book an appointment, offering to drive them or simply checking in again in a few days.
If someone has been struggling, it’s affecting their daily life or they’re worried about how they’re feeling, a longer appointment with a GP can be a good place to start. Clinical psychology is also available at Praxis Medical.
Most importantly, don’t underestimate what it means to stay in the conversation.
