Most of what keeps a day surgery running well is not visible from the waiting room.

Have a pair of glasses sitting in a drawer that you no longer need?

We collect unwanted glasses at our day surgeries for Lions Recycle for Sight Australia. Donated frames go to one of three recycling centres in Queensland, where they are cleaned, graded and labelled under strict quality control, then refurbished and reused in communities overseas.

If you have an old pair at home, bring them with you next time you visit.

Today is World Patient Safety Day but the reality is that every day is patient safety day for us.

A very special milestone at Boroondara Day Surgery as we proudly celebrated caring for our 2,000th patient today with Dr Thomas Gin.

For most people, a day surgery visit is a short chapter in a much longer story about their sight. Our job is to make that chapter calm and well looked after, from the moment someone arrives at reception to the phone call the day after they go home.

Thank you to our nursing, admission and reception teams, and to every patient who has trusted us with their care.

Following your surgery, there are a few important things to know before you head home.

For the first 24 hours, you must not drive, operate machinery or drink alcohol. You will also need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you overnight. If those arrangements cannot be made, we are not able to admit you, so it helps to sort that out early.

Before you leave, our nursing team will take the time to go through your written post-operative instructions with you and answer any questions you may have.

Once you are home, if you have concerns, please contact your surgeon straight away. Their number will be included on your post-operative instruction sheet.

What is day surgery?

If you've been referred for a procedure, you might be wondering what happens at a day surgery.

Here's how it works: day surgery is for people who are basically fit and healthy, and it means arriving and leaving on the same day. There's no need to go to a larger hospital or stay overnight.

Most patients are with us for around 2 to 4 hours in total, depending on the procedure and recovery.

A few things to arrange beforehand: you'll need another adult to accompany you and take you home safely, and it's important that someone stays with you for the first night after your procedure.
