Dr Andrew has spent quite a bit of time this year in London undertaking extensive training with the Royal Veterinary College in laparoscopic desexing, learning from veterinary specialists and leading human gynaecologists to further develop his skills in this advanced surgical technique.

But why was learning this method so important to him?

When asked, Dr Andrew’s answer was simple: because it has the potential to significantly reduce post-operative pain compared with traditional desexing.

Laparoscopic desexing, also known as keyhole surgery, uses a small camera and specialised instruments inserted through tiny incisions. Unlike a traditional open approach, where the ovaries are brought towards the incision to allow access, laparoscopic surgery allows the procedure to be performed internally, with minimal handling and less traction on the surrounding tissues.

For Dr Andrew, investing in this training is about continually looking for ways to improve the care we provide, with a focus on patient comfort, recovery and wellbeing. 💙

We want our puppy patients, like divine Bobby who is pictured here, feeling safe, confident and comfortable at Tooronga. So, how do we help make that happen?

We carefully manage interactions with other dogs in the clinic. We don’t want your puppy’s first experiences with an unfamiliar dog or the hospital to involve being grumbled at or frightened! 🦮

Whatever makes your puppy happy! Treats, toys, play, praise - every puppy is different! We don’t decide what’s rewarding; your puppy does. We find what they love and use it to create positive experiences. 🧀

Not every visit needs to involve an examination or vaccination. Our clients are always welcome to pop in, jump on the scales, grab a treat and head off again if you want to visit without an appointment or happen to be passing by! No needles, no fuss, just love and cuddles from our Client Relations team! ⚖️

Choice instead of force. We encourage puppies into consultation rooms with treats, encouragement and curiosity rather than dragging them in by the lead. Giving them time to explore and settle sets the whole visit up for success.🚪

We pay attention to body language, allow breaks and adjust our approach when needed using their behaviour as our guide. A puppy who needs a little extra time isn’t being difficult, they’re communicating with us, and we want our patients to feel heard. 💙

Gentle introductions to veterinary handling and having their paws, ears and bodies checked can help puppies become more comfortable with the interactions they’ll experience throughout their lives. 🐾

If you’ve visited us on a Sunday before, you probably know Jade!

Born and raised in Melbourne, Jayde’s love for veterinary medicine began with her gentle giant, Bosco, who was by her side when she started her pet care journey back in high school. Although Bosco is no longer with her, his memory continues to inspire her career and reminds her of the incredible bond we share with our animals.

These days, Jayde’s home is full of fur, fluff, and feathers between pets of her own, and being part of the Australian Border Force foster community, helping raise some very energetic and cleaver working Labrador Retrievers!

After completing her Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences, Jayde is now working towards her veterinary nursing qualification. We’re so lucky to have Jayde as part of our Client Relations team and can’t wait to see where her journey in veterinary medicine takes her. 👩🏼‍⚕️

Happy Vet Nurse Day! 🩺🐾

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible veterinary nurses and technicians who make a monumental difference to our patients, their people, and our team here at Tooronga Veterinary Hospital.

Veterinary nursing is so much more than cuddles and caring for animals (although there is plenty of that!). Our nurses are responsible for monitoring anaesthesia and assisting with surgery, administering medications, supporting patients through recovery, recognising subtle changes in behaviour, and helping animals feel safe during their hospital visit, whilst also working with their own patients through nurse consultation services.

They’re our patients’ comforters, advocates, and champions. They offer a calm hand during stressful moments, offer compassion supporting families through some of their hardest days and are also our patients biggest supporters celebrating wins alongside fur families.

The knowledge, technical skills, attention to detail, and dedication of nurses are essential to delivering the high standard of care Tooronga is committed to. Today is an important reminder to recognise the expertise and contribution of this incredible profession. Veterinary nurses and technicians are an essential part of the clinical team, and their work deserves to be celebrated, valued, and supported.

Grooming isn’t just about looking good. 🛁

A freshly groomed pet might look lovely, or smell better, but grooming is about much more than keeping your dog or cat looking their best. It can have a real impact on their comfort, skin health and even their behaviour.

We often hear “But cats groom themselves right?” Yes, cats are impressively good at keeping themselves clean. But self-grooming doesn’t replace brushing and other care. Loose hair, particularly in long-haired cats, can build up into tangles and mats that a cat simply can’t remove themselves.

Mats aren’t just a visual problem. As they become tighter, mats can pull on the skin and make movement uncomfortable or restricting. They can trap moisture and debris against the skin and, in severe cases, become genuinely painful. This can have a knock-on effect on behaviour. A pet who is uncomfortable may become more irritable, withdrawn, restless or reluctant to be handled.

Some pets are frightened or highly distressed by brushing, clipping, nail trims or being handled for the purpose of grooming. For these animals, repeatedly forcing them through grooming can make the experience stressful and increase the risk of injury to both the pet and the people trying to help.

For a severely matted, distressed or otherwise difficult-to-groom pet, grooming under sedation can be a compassionate option. 🐾

Sedation allows handlers to safely remove painful mats and properly examine the skin without putting the animal through prolonged fear or struggling. It can be particularly helpful when a coat needs significant work, when mats are already causing discomfort, or when previous grooming experiences have been traumatic.

It’s not about taking the “easy way out”. Sometimes the kindest option is simply removing the stressor and getting the job done without fear, pain or a battle. We can also work pet’s families on a manageable grooming routine and desensitisation to help prevent bad hair days.

Grooming can make your pet look fabulous, but more importantly - a comfortable coat is part of a comfortable pet. 💙

At Tooronga, “out the back” doesn’t really exist.

There are our consulting spaces, and there is our hospital - and we want you to feel comfortable knowing where your pet is and what’s happening while they’re in our care.

For some pets, having their person close by can make a big difference. Where it is clinically appropriate and our teams can provide care without interruption, we’re happy to support you staying with your pet in non-sterile areas of the hospital. Being able to stay together can help some pets feel more settled and secure, and can complement the healthcare plan our clinical teams have put together for them.

But we also understand that staying with your pet isn’t always possible, or that you might simply prefer to leave them in our care while you duck off to work, grab a coffee or take a moment for yourself. If that’s the case, you can rest assured they’re not just being whisked “out the back.” As you can see from one of our very well-loved patients pictured here, our clinical team provides plenty of cuddles, attention and reassurance. 💙

We believe good veterinary care is about more than what happens during the examination or procedure, it’s about creating an environment where pets feel safe, families feel informed, and everyone has a little more choice in how their visit looks. 🐾

Talk about riding in style! 🚗💨

Ava and Hank recently visited us at Tooronga for their yearly health checks and vaccinations, and as you can see it was quite the adventure!

Ava prefers to take in the world from the top of her pet pram, while Hank is much happier adventuring from the comfort of the inside! 🐈

Whether your pet is out exploring on four paws, travelling in a pram, or mostly enjoying life from the comfort of home, keeping up with their yearly health check and vaccinations is still important. Even indoor cats and dogs who don’t get out much can be exposed to infectious diseases. Viruses and bacteria can make their way into the home on shoes, clothing, other animals, visitors or during those unexpected trips to the vet, groomer or day care.
