Saving for Your Kids

Josh highlights a common first step many parents take before seeking financial advice: putting money into a savings account. Whether it’s birthday gifts, contributions from grandparents, or regular weekly deposits from parents, this approach helps start the habit of saving, even before a formal investment strategy is set up.

What should students know before they leave school?

Josh believes financial literacy should be a much bigger part of the conversation.
Understanding tax, cash flow, payslips and how to manage money can make a real difference when students step into life after school.

It is also the reason behind Link Wealth’s Beyond School program, which brings real-world financial education to students in Years 10 to 12.

The big takeaway: money skills should start well before your first full-time pay cheque.

Is chasing the next big investment costing you?

In this episode of The Winner’s Playbook, Josh and Billy unpack what has been happening across markets, including why the Australian share market has lagged behind the US and how much of the recent growth has been driven by tech and AI.

They break down index funds, active management, semiconductor stocks, market hype, and why chasing the latest winner can leave investors exposed when the money moves elsewhere.

They also dive into redundancies, building a personal brand, and private ancillary funds, including how wealthy families can use them to give more strategically and manage charitable donations over time.

The big takeaway: building wealth is not just about picking the next winner. It is about staying diversified, protecting your income, and making sure your money is working with purpose.

Investing for Short-Term Goals

Josh Lee - Financial Adviser explains how to align investments with timelines. For parents needing funds in the near term, like a child starting school soon, it’s safer to use accessible accounts rather than volatile growth portfolios. Matching your investment strategy to your time horizon helps manage risk and ensures money is available when needed.

Building wealth doesn’t have to start with building a business

Josh and Billy talk about a path to wealth that doesn’t involve going all-in on entrepreneurship. For a lot of people, a traditional job feels like the safer move, and that’s completely fair.

Their take is simple: if you can find work you enjoy and that gives you some upside, like a role tied to performance, you can still grow your income and create real momentum over time.

Investing Made Simple: Josh's Take

Josh and Billy discuss how building wealth today doesn’t have to follow the old path of “buy your home, pay it off, then buy another property.”

Back then, investing outside property meant relying heavily on a stockbroker, dealing with larger minimum parcels, and paying high brokerage fees.

Today, investing is more accessible, cheaper, and streamlined, opening opportunities beyond traditional routes.

Income and wealth are not the same.

Income is what you earn. Wealth is what you keep, grow and build over time.

The difference often comes down to how you save, invest, manage debt and plan for the future.

A higher income can create more opportunities, but strong financial habits are what turn those opportunities into long-term progress.

SMSF Changes Explained – Quick Take

Josh and Billy break down the recent update on self-managed super funds (SMSFs). While the move to limit SMSF property investing has been discussed for years, the timing caught many by surprise.

It wasn’t in the federal budget, yet just weeks later, the government announced immediate changes. Labour moved quickly under pressure from the Greens to implement this.

Taxes in today's world: What you need to know

Josh and Billy breakdown the current tax landscape. The 50% capital gains tax discount is gone, and bracket creep is accelerating.

For those earning over $190K, roughly half of income goes straight to the government.

On top of that, GST, fuel excise, and other indirect taxes take another 10–20%, and housing costs consume the rest.

Capital gains tax, income tax, and new minimum rates on trust income are all increasing.

This is a big change from the last 25 years, where these measures weren’t in place.

Family home considerations for expats

Josh and Tristan Perry discuss the impact of moving offshore on a family home. If the whole family relocates, the home is often rented out. In that scenario, CGT discounts no longer apply.

Tristan highlights that the principal place of residence rules remain unchanged. If you owned the home for 10 years, moved offshore for three, rented it out, and then returned, you could still maintain the exemption, as long as you continue to meet the residency requirements for tax purposes.

This is an important consideration for Australians planning an offshore move while retaining domestic property.
