✨🎉Congratulations Dr Prakashni Reddy!

Banksia Palliative Care is proud to share that Dr Prakashni Reddy, Physiotherapist at Banksia Palliative Care, has successfully published her PhD thesis, "Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Q***r Issues in Palliative Care."

This outstanding achievement represents many years of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to advancing knowledge within palliative care. Dr Reddy's research explores the experiences, needs, and considerations of LGBTQI+ people in palliative care, contributing valuable insights that support inclusive, person-centred care and equitable access to services.

The publication of this work is a significant milestone, not only for Dr Reddy personally, but also for the broader palliative care sector. It reflects the important role that research plays in informing practice, increasing understanding, and improving care outcomes for diverse communities.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Dr Prakashni Reddy on this remarkable accomplishment and thank her for her valuable contribution to palliative care research. Hooray!!

Calling all clinical and allied health professionals working in palliative care! This professional development is for you! ✨

This is a full day seminar that explores the psychological dimensions of end-of-life care equipping participants with the skills to identify, assess and respond to the emotional and complex mental health needs of patients and their carers.

Recognizing the emotional demands of working in palliative care, the workshop will also address clinician wellbeing, offering strategies for self-care and sustainable professional practice.

Meet Tina, one of Banksia’s volunteers

Tina ‘felt a calling’ to volunteer for Banksia when she saw a poster calling for volunteers at Woolworths. “People who have experience with family dying will be drawn to palliative care.”

Tina’s been caring for family and friends for a long time. When she was aged five, her dad ended up at the Austin with a broken back, and she became a page-turner for others laid up in beds. “If you can, then you must. Giving feels good, so I do it.”

As a volunteer for Banksia Tina visits clients and carers in their homes offering companionship. Having been a carer herself, she knows what a difference it is to have extra support in the home. “It’s very stressful being a carer. Everything revolves around the person you’re caring for and there’s no time for yourself – it’s exhausting. When I go into someone’s home, I can give the carer a break and share a laugh. It’s a genuine relationship I have with them while I’m there and I know they look forward to me coming. I feel I have to be here doing this work” and for that we at Banksia are grateful.

Banksia's bereavement social group is meeting next Friday 4 September for another catch up.

This social group is open to anyone who has been a carer for a Banksia client. We meet to connect people with others who share the lived experience of having cared for a loved one who has died. It’s an opportunity for a cuppa and informal conversation about life and loss.

We meet at the café . Those who are interested can take a walk together through the gardens at the end of the meetup.

Banksia Palliative Care offers Community Conversations – free, engaging presentations for community groups, clubs and organisations that explore topics such as supporting ageing parents, planning ahead, caring at home, understanding palliative care, and knowing what support is available.

Banksia is at it again! After a hugely successful Advance Care Planning Workshop in March, we're running another with partners Nillumbik Shire Council and Northern Health Advance Care Planning.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn all there is to know about Advance Care Planning (ACP). This is not just people who are ill. ACP is for everyone.

Let's be honest, most of us would rather not think about serious illness, dying, or end-of-life care. But just as we prepare for the beginning of life, we can also bring care and attention to its final chapter.

Banksia Palliative Care will discuss what palliative care really is, who it helps and why it matters. At its heart, palliative care is about people, relationships, comfort and making the most of every day. No prior knowledge is needed to attend – just an openness to learn about a service that may one day support you, someone you love or someone in your community.

Nurses Wendy and Dianne (a Banksia volunteer) have been getting out and about for Dying to Know Day.

Yesterday you would have found them at Northern Health Hospital foyer telling everyone about palliative care and that we are a service which is available to the community, for free, in the home, for anyone living in the Nillumbik, Banyule and Whittlesea communities. It was super busy and a few more people know about us now.
