Guru Purnima (also know as Vyasa Purnima), is a festival dedicated to honoring spiritual and academic teachers, or gurus. It is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July).
Some traditions say tradition, Guru Purnima was the day Lord Shiva became the first Guru. Other traditions say it was the day Krisha Dwaipayana Vyasa was born. His parents are Parashara and Satyavati. Vyasa, as a young man, collected the Vedas and divided its hymns into four parts. They became Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda.
In Buddhism, Guru Purnima commemorates the day when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. It was the moment he became a teacher, a guru to his first five disciples, thereby setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma.
In Jainism, it is believed that Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, made Indrabhuti Gautam his first disciple on this day, marking the beginning of the guru-disciple tradition in Jainism as well.
The Legend of Adi Yogi:
Yogic tradition traces the beginning of Guru Purnima to Adi Yogi, the first yogi. On this day, he is said to have turned south to impart his knowledge to seven seekers, who became the Saptarishis. This moment marks the origin of the guru-shishya tradition.
Regardless of the traditional background, all focus is upon guru, as you understand guru.
