What happens when 25+ years of pain care experience meets a passionate group of OTs? 🧠✨

Last week, we launched our first Pain Care OT Small Group Supervision Program! Moving from a mental health OT mindset to delivering confident, long-term interventions in complex pain is a major milestone for any clinician.

After just our first 90-minute session, here is a window into the transformative "lightbulb moments" our participants walked away with:

💡 Function Over Eradication: A huge shift for the group was re-anchoring in our core OT roots. The goal of pain care OT isn't to wave a magic wand and eliminate pain; it’s about establishing realistic, values-based functional goals so clients can reclaim the activities they love (like returning to their gardens or market stalls), even while managing symptoms.

💡 You Don't Need to Be a Neuroscientist: Many clinicians experience imposter syndrome around heavy neuroanatomy. The group realised that while pain science literacy is important, clients come to us because we are experts in occupation—and that is exactly where the therapeutic magic happens.

💡 The Power of the "Third Space": We explored how the client is the ultimate expert in their lived experience of pain, while the OT is the expert in functional adaptation. Together, we build a collaborative "third space" built on deep validation and neurological safety.

As an OTA-endorsed Mental Health OT, Director of Lifeworks OT, and an officer of The Australian Pain Society, nothing fills my cup more than watching clinicians lean into self-compassion, develop clinical excellence, and upgrade their reflective capacity.

We are only one session into this 24-week journey, and the clinical co-reflection is already next-level! 🎒💼

Do you find yourself constantly saying "yes" when every fiber of your being wants to say "no"? Or perhaps you feel an overwhelming sense of guilt the moment you try to prioritise your own needs?

You might be dealing with loose boundaries. 🍂

Our wonderful OT, Rachel Hopkins, has written a powerful new blog diving deep into The Art of Healthy Boundaries and how they impact our mental health, relationships, and daily routines.

As OTs, we look at how your roles and relationships influence your ability to live a meaningful, balanced life. Rachel breaks down:
🔹 The different types of boundaries (Time, Emotional, Physical, and Communication)
🔹 The signs your boundaries might be too loose or too rigid
🔹 Practical strategies to start noticing discomfort and communicating your limits

If you've ever felt that setting a boundary is "selfish" or "aggressive," this read is for you. Hint: It’s actually the ultimate tool for preventing burnout and strengthening your relationships!

"Doing, Being, Becoming, and Belonging" 🌿✨
Our very own Jacintha Bell has been in Adelaide this week for the APS 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting, where she co-facilitated the "Purpose Beyond Pain" pre-conference workshop, with a group of Pain OT's from across Australia.
It wasn't just a morning of theory; it was a morning of doing. The workshop was designed to help clinicians apply practical, occupation-focused strategies to help people living with persistent pain explore function and meaning.
One of the highlights was exploring Trauma-Informed Care, using creative activities like drawing therapeutic spaces to reflect on how we create safety for our clients.
Thank you to the wonderful collective of OT's who co-presented (Hannah Kennedy, Katrina Liddiard, Angela Hodge-Polak, Huong Nguyen and Michael Deen), and all the attendees willing to step outside their comfort zones!! 🎓
