Sleep apnoea is more common than many people realise, and it’s often left undiagnosed because the symptoms can be easy to dismiss.
While loud snoring is one of the most recognised signs, it’s not the only one.
Morning headaches, excessive daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability and waking up gasping for air can all be indicators that your breathing is being disrupted during sleep.
In many cases, it’s actually a partner who first notices pauses in breathing or repeated gasping throughout the night.
Left untreated, obstructive sleep apnoea can affect more than just how rested you feel. It has also been linked to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and reduced quality of life.
If these symptoms sound familiar, don’t ignore them. Speak with your GP about whether a referral for a sleep assessment may be appropriate.
