Following intense public criticism, the government has announced a review of the use of the algorithm which is being used by aged care assessors to determine the level of care to which a person is entitled.
The government has promised to announce the outcome of the review by the middle of next year.
The Commonwealth Ombudsman has today also voiced his criticism of the use of the algorithm.
While the decision is welcome it makes no sense to continue making assessors use the algorithym for another 8 months when it is resulting in manifestly unfair outcomes.

The new Schedule of fees and charges for residential care comes into effect from today.
The Basic Daily Fee increases to $68.93.
The non-clinical care contribution increases to $109 45. The Hotelling contribution remains unchanged at $22.15. The lifetime cap on non-clinical care contribution is now $140,652.80 or 4 years (whichever is reached first).
Asset thresholds are increased to $66,500 (fully concessional) to $219,858.40 (partiy concessional).
Anyone with assets greater that $219,858.40 must pay a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) or equivalent Daily accommodation Payment (DAP).
