Many people plan their families carefully, waiting until the time is just right to try for a baby. Most couples assume that once they stop using contraception, pregnancy will happen quickly – but that just isn’t always the case. To women and couples who are having problems conceiving, it can feel like failure and seem that they’re alone in experiencing these difficulties in getting pregnant. But the reality is that this happens much more often than people realise. At some point in their lives, at least 1 in 6 couples will experience some degree of infertility. Traditionally, infertility has been defined as “the inability of couples to achieve conception after a year of unprotected in*******se, or the inability to carry a pregnancy to term.”

If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for 12 months (or 6 months for women over the age of 35), assisted conception might be needed. We encourage you to tour our facilities and meet the scientists, nurses and other staff involved, to help you gain an insight into the science behind the scenes and to give you a sense of how we will look after you during the various stages of your treatment cycle. Through our pioneering science and personal, professional care and support, you can be assured of our dedication at every step.

🌈 Every family starts with its own story. We’re proud to help more rainbow families begin theirs.
This year, we’re partnering with Rainbow Families of Western Australia helping prospective LGBTQIA+ parents feel informed, supported and welcome as they explore their pathways to parenthood.
Having been part of the Perth community for over 25 years, we know how much it matters to have people in your corner. Our team will be joining Rainbow Families WA at three major events in November to answer questions and talk through options, with dedicated community information sessions planned for next year. Dr Baxter is an obstetrician and gynaecologist with a special interest in fertility, endometriosis, pelvic pain and minimally invasive surgery. His approach is grounded in giving patients the time, information and genuine support they need to make the choices that feel right for them.

A milestone win, and a big congratulations to Brad and Trent Dunn, the first same-sex couple to be approved for a surrogacy agreement in WA. For many Western Australians, the path to parenthood through surrogacy has felt out of reach. That is about to change.
New legislation expanding access to altruistic surrogacy has passed in Western Australia and is expected to come into effect in mid-2027.
While the new laws are not yet in operation, the surrogacy journey takes time. Genea Perth, Joondalup and Mandurah are now welcoming appointments for people who would like to begin exploring the process, understand what may be involved and prepare for the next steps.

Father’s Day is this Sunday. If your partner is in the middle of fertility treatment and isn’t a dad yet, it might be a day he’d rather skip altogether.

Male factor is part of the picture in around half of couples facing infertility, and men often say they feel invisible in their own story. Self-blame and grief are common. Talking about it is not. 
Where to start: 
- Ask him how he’s going, not how treatment is going. They’re different questions and he’s probably only being asked the second one. 
- Let him decide what Sunday looks like. Skipping the family lunch is a valid choice, and so is going and leaving early.

- Give him an out at gatherings. A quick heads up about who’s going to be there, and permission to leave without explaining himself, takes a surprising amount of pressure off. 
- Resist reassuring him it will happen. It’s meant kindly and it usually lands as pressure. Sitting with him in the not-knowing is harder and worth more. 
And if you’re finding it difficult to support him while carrying your own grief about the day, that’s not a failing. You’re both in it.

Over the last 40 years, we've helped bring more than 40,000 babies into the world since Professor Robert Jansen founded Sydney IVF in 1986. None of it happens without a team of nurses, embryologists and doctors who saw every patient through, and then watched, quietly proud, as those families went on to build a life.

Forty years of firsts. Forty years of families.

We have gone back to some of those families to ask a question we don't often get to explore. What happens after the baby?

The twins who now play sport for Australia. The son who became a surgeon. The daughter who was the ultimate birthday gift, born on her father's birthday.

This is what 40 years actually looks like.

No better chance, no greater care isn't just our promise to patients. It's been 40 years in the making, and we're honoured to keep delivering on it.

We are so lucky to have the most enthusiastic, experienced, thoughtful and caring scientists in our lab, who work tirelessly to help patients and staff alike.
