25 Year Anniversary teaching Yoga today!!
I’m Andrea Freeman, a Yoga teacher and Ayurvedic therapist based in Perth, West Australia!
I’m of Welsh and English heritage, born in Canada, raised in the English countryside, and educated in South Africa — in the coastal towns of Port Elizabeth and Durban. My deep connection to nature began as a child wandering through the Surrey woods. I remember, at age nine, feeling so much joy that I created a little ritual — brushing my teeth while standing on my head — just to imprint the moment. That early love of presence and ritual has stayed with me ever since.
As a teenager in South Africa, I was introduced to movement through the expressive power of Modern Dance, studying with the wonderful Lesley Albrecht. We practiced rhythm, improvisation, breath, and many yoga poses — unknowingly planting the seeds of what would become my path. Around the age of 16, I began writing poetry and exploring life’s big questions. I stumbled across a book called Yoga: The Key to Life by James McCartney. I was captivated by its philosophy and potential for transformation.
At 25, I set off as a backpacker to India for three months. That first visit was absolutely mind-blowing — the colours, the culture, the temples — all of it. Soon after, I arrived in Australia and made Perth my home. As a mother, I returned to yoga through weekly Hatha classes and found myself utterly inspired. After five years of devoted practice, my teacher, Marg Willcocks, encouraged me to become a teacher. I studied with the IYTA and qualified in 2001.
For 25 years now, I’ve taught yoga in Perth’s northern suburbs. I’ve been privileged to witness students transform in body, breath, and spirit — many of whom have practiced with me for over two decades. In 2015, I discovered Yin Yoga and began training with Jo Phee, who studied under Paul Grilley. Yin brought a new dimension of stillness and spaciousness to my practice, and I eagerly integrated it into my teaching.
Along the way, I returned to India, this time to Rishikesh — the spiritual heart of yoga. Spending time there deepened my reverence for this sacred path and its origins. I also came to feel that something essential was missing — the lifestyle and nutrition side of the yogic path. This led me to complete a Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselling in 2017, where I fell in love with body therapies like Abhyanga massage. Today, in my Santosa Room in Kingsley, I offer a range of Ayurvedic treatments, herbal blends, and nourishing touch-based healing.
I currently teach yoga classes every day, including Chair Yoga, and work with a wonderful community — most of whom are aged 60 and above. I have held numerous day retreats, a Bali Retreat and 5 local weekend Retreats. My values are consistency, honesty, and authenticity, and my purpose is to reduce stress, open the body through breath and movement, and help others find that quiet spaciousness within their heart, behind all the noise — to remember they are so much more than their thoughts.
I love to draw and paint; enjoy music, film, books, cooking; love exploring my local lake, my shadow ginger cat Aslan (Weasley) and creating nurturing classes and Retreats.
Looking ahead, I hope to keep learning, sharing, and offering tools that help people stay strong, flexible, and deeply connected — into their senior years and beyond! 🙏 Namaste 💐🪷🧡🤗
