Our optometrist Nandita attended the Narellan Eye Specialists Continuing Education Night at Camden Surgical Hospital this week, learning about the latest advancements in cataract surgery, age-related macular degeneration and other areas of eye health and treatment.

Eye care is constantly evolving, with new research, technology and treatment options continuing to advance. Staying up to date allows us to bring the latest knowledge back to Picton Eyecare and provide our patients with the best possible care, right here in our local community.

💙 August is Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) Awareness Month

Did you know your child can have a lazy eye and not even realise it?

Amblyopia (lazy eye) happens when one eye doesn't develop clear vision like the other. Because the stronger eye compensates, children often don't complain or show any obvious symptoms — to them, the way they see feels completely normal.

Signs to look out for 👀

* An eye turning in or out
* Squinting or closing one eye
* Tilting their head to see
* Difficulty with reading or close work
* Blinking excessively
* Poor depth perception or difficulty catching a ball

Remember, sometimes there are no signs at all, which is why regular children's eye examinations are so important.

Can amblyopia be treated?

Yes! Depending on your child's needs, treatment may include:
👓 Prescription glasses
👁️ Patching the stronger eye
💧 Atropine eye drops in selected cases
Regular monitoring as their vision develops

🚨 "Optometrists punished for putting patients before sales?"
A recent Sydney Morning Herald article has sparked an important conversation about the pressures optometrists working in large corporate chains, including OPSM and Specsavers, may face. The article reports concerns about sales targets, KPIs and time pressures that, according to those reports, can influence the way care is delivered.

This reflects why our optometrist Nandita made the decision to leave OPSM five years ago and establish an independent practice - to provide patient-centred care without retail sales targets influencing clinical decisions.

As an independent practice:
💙 We are not driven by retail sales targets.
💙 We don't rush appointments to fit more people into the day.
💙 We never turn away eye emergencies because they don't fit a sales model.
💙 We work closely with local GPs, pharmacists and ophthalmologists so our patients receive the best possible care.

Choosing where you have your eyes tested is about much more than the price of a pair of glasses. It's about who has the time to listen.

Who has the time to investigate.

And who is making decisions based solely on what's best for your eye health.
