The Role of Bone Density in Longevity
You can't feel your bones getting weaker. That's exactly the problem.

Bone density peaks in your late 20s and declines steadily from there — faster after menopause in women, more gradually in men. Osteopenia and osteoporosis develop without symptoms, and most people don't know their bone density is low until a fracture occurs.

A hip fracture in older age is one of the most significant predictors of loss of independence. The good news is that bone density responds to the right stimulus — progressive resistance training and impact loading are the most effective interventions, alongside adequate nutrition.

At BeFit Edgecliff we offer DEXA scanning — the gold standard for measuring bone density — giving you an accurate baseline and the ability to track change over time. For people already diagnosed with osteoporosis or low bone density, ONERO is our supervised exercise programme specifically designed to address it.

Returning to sport after injury is not a straight line. It takes structured rehab, honest assessment and a plan that moves with you. At BeFit we work with you across every stage — from early rehab through to full training load. If you are not sure where you are in that process or what comes next, an assessment is the right place to start. Link in bio.

Training for Life, Not Aesthetics
Most people train for how they look. Longevity research suggests we should train for what we can do — and for how long we can keep doing it.

The four physical pillars that matter most for a long, healthy and independent life are strength, endurance, mobility and stability. All four decline with age. All four are trainable.

Training for life doesn't mean giving up performance. It means adding a longer time horizon to your goals. The same foundations that keep you injury-free at 45 are what keep you independent at 75 — if they're built deliberately and maintained consistently.

At BeFit we work with people across every stage of life — building physical capacity that lasts well beyond the short term.

Tricep strength matters for pushing, pressing and overhead stability. Physio Jackson runs through the bentover tricep kickback — keep the upper arm locked parallel to the ground, extend fully, and bring it back under control. Let the muscle do the work, not momentum. It is a simple drill but easy to rush. If you are building upper body strength as part of rehab or training, it is worth having your program assessed individually.

Why Muscle Mass Predicts Independence
Muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of functional independence as you age. People with greater muscle mass in their 50s and 60s are significantly more likely to remain mobile, active and independent into their later decades.

Without deliberate intervention, the average person loses 3–8% of muscle mass per decade from their 30s onward. The consequences are reduced strength, higher fall risk, slower metabolism and loss of independence — a condition known as sarcopenia.

The evidence is clear: progressive resistance training builds meaningful muscle mass at any age. The body responds to load. The key is starting, progressing and doing it consistently.

At BeFit Edgecliff and Coogee we programme strength work in the context of your health, injury history and long-term goals — not just for aesthetics, but for the capacity that keeps you active and independent.

Core strength is not just about crunches. The Pallof press trains your trunk to resist rotation, which matters for lifting, running and most sport. Physio Alex shows three stances that build on each other: standing, split stance, then lunge stance. As the base narrows, the demand on the core and hips increases. Move slowly, hold briefly at full reach, and keep the hips square. Everyone starts in a different place, so it is worth an individual assessment before loading it up.

Grip Strength and Longevity
Your grip strength is one of the most consistent predictors of longevity in the research literature — associated with cardiovascular health, cognitive function, fall risk and overall mortality independent of other health markers.

It's not just about your hands. Grip strength is a proxy for overall muscular strength and neuromuscular function — a reflection of how well your body has maintained its capacity to produce force over time.

The best way to improve it is progressive resistance training. Compound movements and specific grip work build the capacity that transfers directly to independence and long-term health.

At BeFit Coogee we use objective grip strength testing — including VALD dynamometry — as part of our strength and longevity assessments.

Why VO2 Max Matters As You Age
VO2 max is one of the strongest predictors of how well you age — more powerful than cholesterol, blood pressure or BMI alone. It measures your body's maximum capacity to use oxygen during exercise, and it declines by roughly 10% per decade after 30 without deliberate training.

The good news is that it's highly trainable at any age. Structured aerobic exercise and higher intensity intervals have been shown to improve VO2 max significantly — even in people in their 60s and 70s.

At BeFit we offer VO2 max testing through Everlab at both our Edgecliff and Coogee clinics — giving you an objective baseline and a structured plan to improve it.

Getting back to sport takes more than waiting for the pain to settle. It takes building the strength, capacity and confidence to handle what your sport actually demands.

If you're working toward a return — we can help you get there properly.

The most common training mistake runners make is only running to prepare to run. Strength, load management, gait efficiency and early ni**le management are what separate runners who stay injury-free from those who don't.

At BeFit we offer running-specific strength programming, gait analysis, load management and race goal planning — whether you're returning from injury or building toward your next event.
