Two days of rest after a back flare is reasonable. Beyond that, the evidence shifts toward keeping the body moving — at a lower load, with a clearer understanding of what's irritated and why.

At BeFit we assess what's actually happening, then build a return-to-training plan that fits your sport, your schedule, and your body.

Questions about a recent flare? Send us a DM.

The spine is not fragile. It never was.

One of the most persistent — and harmful — beliefs about back pain is that the back needs protecting. In most cases, the opposite is true.

Swipe to understand what the evidence actually says about loading, movement, and long-term recovery.

We would like to introduce Millie Scutt, physiotherapist and sports scientist at our Edgecliff clinic.

Millie brings a rare combination of clinical physiotherapy and high-performance sport experience to her work at BeFit. She has worked as a strength and conditioning coach with the Sydney Roosters NRLW team and holds dual qualifications in Exercise and Sport Science and Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney, alongside an ASCA Level 2 Strength and Conditioning Accreditation.

Her clinical interests include sports injuries, ACL rehabilitation, knee and ankle rehabilitation, lower limb injuries, return-to-sport programming, and supporting women in sport and exercise. Having navigated sporting injuries herself, she understands both the physical and psychological aspects of recovery and brings that lived experience to every patient she works with.

If your back flares up during a training block, the instinct is to stop everything.

In most cases, that's not what the evidence supports. A flare-up and a serious structural injury are very different things — and knowing the difference changes how you manage it.

BeFit works with active people across Edgecliff and Coogee to keep training moving through periods of back pain, with modifications that make sense for where your body is right now.

Save this for the next time you're not sure what to do.

Meet the Team — Jackson Mayer
Clinic: 📍 Coogee

Jackson's journey into physiotherapy began through sport — competing at state level soccer in NSW before earning a place at NCAA Division 1 with CSUN in California. That background, and the experience of navigating injuries along the way, shaped a clinical focus on strength-based rehabilitation, return-to-sport programming, and performance-focused exercise rehabilitation.

Jackson holds a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Honours) and a Master of Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney, and currently works as a physiotherapist with Hakoah FC alongside his role at BeFit Coogee.

He works with athletes and active individuals across all levels — from elite and semi-professional sport through to recreational participants looking to move better and stay active.

If back pain has made you scared to bend, twist, or extend — that's not unusual. It's your nervous system doing its job.

But avoidance has a cost. And gradually rebuilding confidence in those movements is often what changes things.

Swipe to understand the relationship between fear, movement, and recovery.

Save this if it's relevant to you — or share it with someone who's been stuck.

Confidence in your back changes everything about how you move — and how you recover.

At BeFit, we work with active people in Edgecliff and Coogee who've been told to stop, rest, and wait. In most cases, a structured, progressive return to load is exactly what the evidence supports.

Struggling with back pain? An assessment is the first step.

Tag someone who needs to hear this.

Back pain and the belief that you need to protect your spine — indefinitely — is one of the most common things we work to undo at BeFit.

The spine is not fragile. It adapts. It strengthens. The evidence on progressive loading for back pain recovery is consistent and clear.

If you've been told to "just rest it," it's worth getting an individual assessment to understand what your back actually needs.

Save this if it challenges what you've been told.
