Migraine in the news! 📣 We were excited to speak with 9News this afternoon about new data showing that the prevalence of migraine in Australia is more than double previous estimates.

New figures released today by the AIHW show that nearly 4 million Australians are living with migraine, with an estimated 2.5 million more potentially undiagnosed.

Carl Cincinnato, lead of our Migraine & Headache Australia division, spoke with Deb Knight about the ongoing barriers to effective migraine care — including PBS restrictions and the high cost of treatment.

The news comes during Migraine and Headache Awareness Week, which is on now from the 21-25 September. We are running free webinars all week with headache experts and live Q&As opportunities.

➡ 📺 Tune in tonight at 6pm on 9 News for the full story.

New Research Opportunity 🧠

Neurotechnology refers to implantable devices that interface with the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nervous system.

Examples may include deep brain stimulation (DBS), brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and other intracortical implants, peripheral neuroprostheses (e.g., technologies used to control prosthetic limbs), sensory neuroprostheses (including investigational devices aimed at restoring hearing or vision), vagus nerve stimulators, and spinal cord stimulators.

The wonderful Garth and his adorable assistance dog, Max, have now raised over $88,000 for the Brain Foundation, alongside two other charities - Act for Kids and Mates4Mates. 🎉💚

These two have walked nearly 8,700km around Australia so far. They are currently crossing the Nullarbor Plain in WA (a long way from their starting destination of Townsville!) and have shown incredible resilience and determination along the way.

We are so grateful for their hard work and the incredible community who have rallied behind the cause. 💪

You can follow their journey on Facebook at Garth & Max’s Australia Lap and can support their fundraiser at the link in comments.

Brain aneurysm awareness saves lives ❤️

This September, we shine a light on the thousands of Australians impacted by aneurysm each year, as well as the researchers and dedicated specialists who treat this complex condition.

A brain aneurysm is a weak, bulging spot on an artery wall in the brain. They are relatively common, and most do not cause any symptoms as they are small and intact.

However, if an aneurysm bursts, it can cause a life-threatening stroke (bleeding in your brain), which requires immediate emergency care.

Knowing the signs - sudden, extremely severe headache, vomiting, seizures, stiff neck - could save a life.

Visit our website to learn more about the condition, discover the research we are funding in this space, and read community stories of people and families impacted by aneurysm.

Diabetes can affect more than blood sugar, with some people experiencing nerve-related symptoms like tingling or burning. Emerging evidence also shows an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Despite this, the links between pain, neuropathy, and cognitive decline in people with diabetes remain poorly understood.

With their 2025 Brain Foundation funding, Dr Cindy Shin-Yi Lin and her team at USYD are using specialised neurophysiology techniques to identify early sensory signs that may predict cognitive impairment.

They hope the results will enable specialists to implement early neuroprotection strategies, helping prevent serious complications and improve long-term physical and cognitive health for people with diabetes.

From migraine to FND, dementia, and multiple sclerosis, many brain conditions disproportionately affect women - yet significant gaps persist in women's healthcare and research, compounded by stigma, low awareness, and barriers to care.

As part of , Beata Roman, CEO of the Brain Foundation, and Carl Cincinnato, Lead of our Migraine & Headache Australia Division, travelled to Canberra this week to support Jean Hailes for Women's Health at their Parliament House breakfast.

With an opening address from Assistant Minister Rebecca White and hosted by Jean Hailes CEO Sarah L. White, the event explored how Australia can better account for s*x and gender in medical research and care — brought to life by an insightful panel discussion.

We were able to connect with government staff and policymakers about the impact of neurological conditions on women, new research findings, and practical policy reforms we’ll be proposing later this month through Migraine & Headache Australia.

Thank you, Jean Hailes, for creating space for these important conversations. Progress in women's health is progress for everyone.

The first session of the week will focus on new national data on migraine and headache in Australia.

Farid Anvari, who leads neurological conditions reporting at the AIHW, will unpack what the findings show and what they mean for people living with migraine.

All sessions are online and completely free to attend. You only need to register ONCE to gain access to all 5 webinars.

Each session involves a presentation or discussion followed by a live Q&A with the audience.
