Let’s talk about ageing skin properly, without the fear-mongering. Here are four things worth knowing about what’s actually going on as the years tick by. A couple might surprise you, and there’s good news hiding in all of them. Have a scroll.

Here’s the one that gets everyone: up to 80% of how your skin visibly ages comes down to the sun, not your age. So if you’ve been standing at the mirror blaming your birthdays, you can let yourself off the hook a little. And up here, where we cop harsher sun than most, this one’s worth taking to heart.

From your mid-20s, you start losing around 1% of your collagen every single year. Collagen is what keeps your skin firm and bouncy, so this is the quiet reason things start to shift through your 30s and 40s. If your skin isn’t quite doing what it used to, you’re not imagining it, and you’re definitely not on your own.

This is the one nobody warns you about. In the first five years after menopause, your skin can lose up to 30% of its collagen. That’s a big change in a short window, and it’s why things can suddenly feel drier, thinner or less firm around that time. It’s completely normal, it’s so common, and there are gentle, sensible things that can genuinely help.

Ever wondered why your skin looks a little duller than it used to? In your 20s it renewed itself about every four weeks. By your 60s, that can take roughly twice as long, so the dead skin cells linger and dim your glow. The good news is there’s plenty we can do to help keep things ticking over.

Here’s what we really want you to take away: so much of this is in your hands. Daily SPF (one part of the picture, not a replacement for a hat and shade), a bit of consistency, and a plan that actually suits your skin, and you’re doing the heavy lifting. If you’ve noticed changes and you’re not sure where to start, come and see us. That’s exactly what a consult is for, no pressure, just a conversation and a plan that’s right for you.

When a device earns its place in the clinic, it has to tick three boxes for us: how it’s regulated, how it’s built, and whether there’s real evidence behind it.

SkinPen® ticks all three. It’s listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a medical device, it was the world’s first FDA-cleared microneedling device, and every treatment uses a brand-new sterile cartridge. It’s also backed by clinical studies for improving the appearance of things like acne scars and fine lines.

Timing-wise, now’s a sensible window. While our dry-season UV sits below its summer peak, it’s an easier time to start a course and stay on top of your aftercare.

Regulated ✔️ Built for safety ✔️ Backed by evidence ✔️ That’s the standard we hold our devices to.

Heading to the Townsville Cup tomorrow? Here’s how to enter Strike a Pose..

We loved seeing your poses on Ladies Day! Quick tip for tomorrow so your entry counts: it needs to be a selfie IN the mirror, not a photo of you facing away. That way the mirror’s in your shot and we can spot your entry.

Here’s the how-to:
1. Stand in front of the mirror at the Strike a Pose spot (under the fig trees)
2. Take a selfie in the mirror
3. Post it to your feed and tag Chrysalis Medispa | Townsville Skin & Cosmetic Clinic
4. Make sure your profile is public so we can verify it
5. Add (not mandatory).

And you’re in the draw to win a HydraFacial. See you at Cup day!

Open to local residents 18+. Game of chance. One entry per post, max two per person. Prize is one HydraFacial (approx $199 RRP) following a complimentary consultation, a skin treatment only, not transferable or redeemable for cash. Results vary between individuals. Entries close 5pm Sat 8 Aug, winner drawn Weds 13 Aug. This competition is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Instagram or Meta. Full T&Cs via link in our bio.
