This one is for those starting out in their podiatry or healthcare career, but also for those who have been working in healthcare for a while and may just need a little reminder!

Healthcare is such a rewarding career, but it can also be quite demanding! We carry conversations, concerns, uncertainty, difficult decisions and the privilege of walking alongside people through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

It’s so important to be mindful of when you’re starting to feel burnt out or disconnected!

As podiatrists, our work is often about helping people regain movement, independence and confidence. We celebrate the wins with our patients and genuinely care when they’re struggling. That connection is one of the best parts of healthcare, but it also means we need to care for ourselves too!

This is something we’re really mindful of here at WPG, which is we’ve intentionally implemented strategies such as not cramming our podiatrists diaries, having our own wellbeing mentoring program, having our quarterly team days, encouraging a healthy work-life balance, and really prioritising a positive working environment and culture.

If you work in healthcare, we’d love to hear what you do to prioritise your wellbeing and reduce burnout!

When we think about balance, we might think about our core or our inner ear, but it’s our feet that are one of the most important contributors to good balance.

Every time your feet touch the ground, thousands of tiny sensory receptors send information to your brain about the surface you’re standing on, how your weight is distributed, and where your body is in space. This process - called proprioception - is your body’s ability to sense its position and movement without needing to look. Your brain then uses this information to make tiny adjustments through your ankles, legs and core, helping to keep you upright and stable.

As we age, or if we’re dealing with pain, injury or certain health conditions, this communication between the feet and the brain can become less efficient. We may notice feeling less steady, more cautious on uneven ground, or needing to concentrate more when balancing.

Balance is something we can improve though! With simple activities - like walking on different (but safe) surfaces, feet and ankle strengthening exercises, single-leg balance practice, and staying physically active - these can all help maintain strength, confidence and stability.

In our clinic, we make sure to look at how your whole body moves, not just where the pain is. We know that healthy feet help create confident movement, and confident movement helps you keep doing the things you love!
