⚠️ Benzene: The Carcinogen Still Found in Australian Sunscreens

Benzene is a Group 1 human carcinogen implicated in the development of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and other blood cancers emerging with links to breast, kidney, bladder and colorectal cancers.
through long-term, low-dose exposure.

Benzene can form as a by-product of chemical UV filters such as octocrylene and avobenzone that degrade under sunlight and heat. It may also appear through solvent residues or raw-material contamination during manufacturing.

Independent testing in 2025 detected benzene in nearly half of aerosol sunscreens analysed, with several products exceeding Australia’s 2 ppm allowance. In comparison, the EU, U.S., Canada, and Japan prohibit any detectable benzene (0 ppm) — eliminating it entirely from their markets.

TGA’s own 2022 tests in Australia showed:
 10 of 21 aerosol sunscreens contained benzene.
 4 exceeded the current 2 ppm limit.

Current regulations continue to permit trace benzene contamination in sun-care products.
