This reel was inspired by many personal and professional conversations about potty training lately. Here are 4 of my unfiltered opinions from the perspective of an occupational therapist and mom of two:

1. The 3 day method doesn’t work for everyone and that is okay!
2. Make sure your child’s feet can touch the ground or a stool while sitting on the potty or toilet.
3. You don’t have to day training and night train at the same time.
4. You can p**p everyday and still be constipated!

The pyramid of learning is one of my favourite ways to help parents understand what might be underlying some of the challenging behaviours that we are seeing in a child.

Many referrals for OT sound like this:
🔴 My child struggles to pay attention and sit still in class
🔴 My child has extreme emotional reactions, which include hitting, screaming and throwing things
🔴 It takes forever for my child to get ready in the mornings. I have to remind them to get dressed 30 times.

What a parent is describing is a “behaviour”. Notice that behaviour is at the top of the pyramid of learning. What this means is that a child needs to have all the skills below the pyramid functioning properly in order to meet the behavioural expectations we are placing on them.

Through a clinical assessment, OTs will determine what underlying skills may be impacting a child’s participation. For example:
💚sensory integration issues
💚Poor bilateral coordination
💚Unable to cross midline
💚Visual tracking difficulties

When we start to be detectives and think about the WHY behind a child’s behaviour it helps us to reframe our understanding of it as a lagging skill rather than defiance.

We will be exploring this concept and more at the “Surviving Life With a Toddler” workshop on June 20! See link in bio to register.

Raising a toddler can feel overwhelming, confusing, and at times, EXHAUSTING. It can be hard to know how to approach all of the complex developmental needs of your kid at this time.

That's why we created the Surviving Life With a Toddler workshop! This group is designed for parents of toddlers age 18 months to 4 years. It will be co-led by perinatal Psychotherapist (Qualifying) Becca Staley from our team, and pediatric Occupational Therapist Brittany So from Brant Kids Therapy.

This workshop is about understanding your child, supporting them, and feeling more confident in how you show up as a parent.

And the best part? If you have benefits coverage for an Occupational Therapist or Psychotherapist, this will likely be covered!!!

This is what following the child’s lead in play-based therapy looks like.

During a session this week a client who has a strong interest in outer space wanted to do an activity related to Artemis 2. So I suggested that we use some lycra around a swing to make a spaceship.

We proceeded to do an activity that worked on many of our therapeutic goals including:
🎉balance
🎉turn taking
🎉body awareness
🎉proprioceptive input
🎉personal space
And more!

Play based/child-led therapy honours a child’s interests and needs during a session while guiding the child to meet their therapy goals.

ONE YEAR OF BRANT KIDS THERAPY 🎉

Today we are celebrating one year since the launch of Brant Kids Therapy. Over the last year we have supported many families and children in the areas of emotional regulation, sensory processing, motor development, anxiety and many other skills.

Thank you to the families who trust us and to the kids that show up ready to work (and play!).

We cannot wait to continue supporting children, families in the Brantford and Brant community in year two!

To celebrate we will be having THREE giveaways throughout the month of March! Each giveaway will include: a free 45 min parent coaching session with Brittany and a curated item from a local business that aligns to our values.

Make sure to follow this page so you don’t miss out on a giveaway!
