On or around 1 August, the ancient Gaelic world marked Lughnasadh, a seasonal festival celebrating the beginning of the harvest.

It stood between the summer solstice and autumn equinox, when the land began revealing the first results of months of labour. Grain was ripening, berries were gathered, and communities faced a powerful threshold: abundance had begun, yet the full harvest was not guaranteed.

Lughnasadh was named after Lugh, the brilliant Irish god associated with skill, sovereignty, craftsmanship, victory and mastery. His name was linked with great assemblies, competitions, trading, feasting and communal celebration. Early traditions also connected the festival with funeral games held in honour of Lugh’s foster mother, Tailtiu, who was said to have died after clearing the land so it could be cultivated.

This made Lughnasadh more than a celebration of food.

It honoured sacrifice.

The harvest existed only through labour: the breaking of soil, planting of seed, endurance of uncertain weather and patience through the growing season. The first fruits were therefore treated with gratitude, reverence and care.

Historic Lughnasadh gatherings could include hill climbing, athletic contests, horse racing, matchmaking, markets, feasting and offerings of the season’s first produce. People gathered not only to celebrate what had grown, but to strengthen the bonds that helped communities survive.

For modern witches and pagans, Lughnasadh can be observed through baking bread, sharing seasonal food, leaving a respectful offering, decorating with grain, giving thanks to the land or reflecting upon the personal seeds planted earlier in the year.

Which efforts are finally producing results?

What deserves gratitude before I ask for more?

Lughnasadh reminds us that not every harvest is complete when it first appears.

Today is not only about receiving abundance.

It is about recognising the labour, loss, patience and unseen growth that made the harvest possible.

May you recognise how much has already begun to grow.

🌞 A Summer Solstice Blessing 🌞

Today I honor the longest day and the power of the Sun at its peak. I give thanks for the light that has guided me, the lessons that have strengthened me, and the blessings that have found their way into my life.

As the Wheel turns, I welcome abundance, joy, good health, and prosperity into my home and heart. May the warmth of the Sun fill every dark corner within me. May I continue to grow in wisdom, strength, and purpose.

I honor my ancestors, my guides, and the spirits who walk beside me. I honor the Earth beneath my feet, the sky above me, and the sacred fire of life that burns within my soul.

May my path be blessed, my home protected, and my heart remain open to the beauty and magic that surrounds me.
