What if practice could feel like the real thing? At HHS, the use of a high-fidelity simulation mannequin makes mock scenarios feel more real. This builds confidence, develops skills, shows our teams how best to work together - ultimately preparing them for real situations, like a code blue.

Thanks to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation for funding this mannequin.

Our Dr. Laura Erdman, together with colleagues, began looking for ways to improve access to syphilis testing among pregnant people facing challenges like substance use, homelessness, and barriers to health care. Their goal is to prevent congenital syphilis in newborns, and also to prevent long-term complications of untreated syphilis in women who face barriers to health care. This led to a one-year pilot study, with key community partners, that uses a simple finger-prick blood test to check for syphilis, with results in just five minutes. https://www.hamiltonhealthsciences.ca/share/studying-a-fast-syphilis-test/

Training for real-life conversations just got real. Our new VR experience puts health-care teams inside realistic patient scenarios to practice, reflect and build confidence navigating sensitive conversations.

This is part of how we’re supporting more inclusive, culturally safe care, and advancing health equity through an initiative called CARE Data - which is the collection of patient sociodemographic information to help us tailor our care to meet the needs of individuals.

React "FAST" to the signs of stroke. The “FAST” acronym is an easy way to remember the warning signs of stroke. Our Dr. James Sahlas demonstrates these signs.

The sooner a stroke is treated, the better the chances are for a good recovery. So remember to act "FAST".

Raising a child with complex medical needs is a nonstop whirlwind for the Monahan family, and any support brings real relief. That’s why they welcomed an invitation from our McMaster Children’s Hospital to take part in a comprehensive, one-time appointment with the doctors, nurses and team members from a wide range of specialties planning Joshua Monahan’s 12-hour spinal surgery last year. This one-stop appointment brings the child, family and key hospital team members together in one room to plan the best ways to support care leading up to a major surgery. This includes ordering any tests that would be needed, like bloodwork, MRIs or ultrasounds; discussing medications; and updating nutrition plans, all of which can help reduce the risk of complications afterwards.

Find out more about this one-stop appointment model, which is unique in Ontario, and possibly also Canada. https://www.hamiltonhealthsciences.ca/share/all-in-one-appointment-model/
