As the Days Get Shorter, Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

As we move further into autumn and approach the darker months, you may notice changes in your energy, motivation, or emotional well-being.

For some, this season brings comfort, reflection, and rest. For others, it can bring increased stress, loneliness, or a sense of heaviness that is difficult to explain.

Wherever you find yourself, remember you do not have to be at your best every day to be doing your best.

Sometimes, caring for your mental health means maintaining routines and reaching out to others. Other times, it means recognizing your limits, allowing yourself to rest, and offering yourself the same compassion you so readily extend to the people around you.

You don't need to wait until you're overwhelmed to seek support. Your emotional well-being matters in every season.

As you navigate the weeks ahead, take a moment to ask yourself: What do I need more of right now, and what might I need to give myself permission to let go of?

A little self-awareness can be the beginning of meaningful change. 💛

Today, many Canadians will gather with family and friends to give thanks. But for others, this day carries a different weight, and I would like to take a moment to acknowledge their experiences
For Indigenous Peoples, it can be a reminder of the profound and lasting impacts of colonization: the loss of land, language, and culture, and of countless lives, along with the intergenerational pain that is still felt today. These truths deserve space. May we meet this day with respect, reflection, and a genuine willingness to listen and learn.
This season may also bring loneliness, grief, or hardship. There are those mourning a loved one, those who have no one to gather with, and many carrying personal struggles that make it hard to find reasons to feel thankful.
Gratitude can be a beautiful thing, but not everyone experiences this time of year with joy or ease, and that is okay. There is no single way to feel on a day of giving thanks, and no one should feel obligated to set aside their sadness simply because the occasion is traditionally one of celebration.
May we approach one another with greater compassion, understanding, and kindness. May we honour the histories and experiences that have shaped us, hold space for those who are hurting, and remember that sometimes the most meaningful gift we can offer is simply to see someone, hear them, and let them know they are not alone.
Wishing everyone whatever they need most right now, whether that is connection, comfort, peace, healing, or the quiet reassurance that they matter.

When anxiety isn't a distortion.

When you don't know if you will be able to pay next month's rent, have food, or you're one unexpected expense away from a fiscal crisis, that isn't a distortion. That's anxiety doing its job telling you something real needs your attention.

Scarcity impacts the mind because when it's preoccupied with not having enough, whether that's money, time, or other resources, the mind keeps returning to it, over and over. When anxiety shows up here, it's because the threat of danger is real.

Overthinking can make things bigger than they are and other times it can be an asset when in a job that needs you to think ten steps ahead. It's helpful to stop the overthinking before it spirals out of control.

There is a profound helplessness that comes with loving a child who is struggling with their mental health. It is a grief that few people understand unless they have lived it. It exists alongside love, hope, fear, guilt, and exhaustion.
The helplessness as a parent watching it unfold. Grieving the loss of who they were before the mental health struggles took hold. Trying repeatedly to help and sometimes being pushed away, blamed, or rejected by the very child you are fighting for.
And the cost that ripples through the whole family. The siblings who witness it all quietly. The relationships and trust that get damaged along the way.
And sometimes, after all of that, the hardest decision a parent can make is to let go. Not because the love is gone. But because holding on is no longer sustainable for you, your family, and the life that still needs to be lived.
You are not alone in this.
I wrote this piece for every parent who has lived this or is living it right now. The full blog is linked below.
If this resonates, please share it with a parent who needs to hear it.

Forgive yourself for not knowing earlier what only time could teach.

We can be so hard on ourselves for the choices we made, the things we missed, the ways we showed up before we knew better. But some lessons can only come through lived experience, growth, and through time quietly doing its work.

That's being human. 🌿

Many people have experienced a toxic workplace at some point in their career. Not every toxic workplace looks the same, but they all have one thing in common; they come with a cost. A cost to the people trying to work within it, and a cost to the output of the workplace itself.Let's be real. We know...
