Why has the navel been revered as the seat of life force across ancient traditions? ♥️
The navel is intimately connected with life, nourishment, fertility, and creation. In yogic and Ayurvedic traditions, the region around the navel is considered a powerful energetic centre — associated with Manipura (the solar plexus chakra), digestion, personal power, transformation, and vitality.
This is also why the midriff has traditionally been left uncovered in the sari. Beyond its beauty and practicality, some traditions view the exposed navel region as a way of allowing prana — life-force energy — to move freely.
Then there is Hara, located approximately two inches below the navel.
In Japanese traditions, the Hara/Tanden is regarded as an important centre of ki (life energy), grounding, stability, and inner strength. In martial arts and intensive physical practices, developing strength and awareness in this area is considered fundamental.
In Reiki, this region is also given special importance. Usui Reiki teachings refer to the Tanden as an important energetic centre. Reiki practitioners may work around this area with the intention of restoring balance, grounding, and replenishing the body’s energetic reserves.
And have you ever noticed gurgling or digestive sounds during a Reiki session?
From a Reiki perspective, these sounds are sometimes interpreted as the body moving toward a deeper state of relaxation and rest after prolonged stress or “fight-or-flight” activation. Physiologically, of course, digestive sounds can simply reflect normal movement of the gastrointestinal system.
The deeper invitation is to reconnect with this powerful centre — the place where breath, digestion, grounding, movement, and our sense of vitality meet. ✨
In the next part of this series, I’ll share more about the Hara, Tanden, and their significance in Reiki practice.
