August 31 is recognized as International Overdose Awareness Day throughout the world. This year marks the twentieth anniversary of this somber event, which originated at a Salvation Army branch in Melbourne, Australia.

This initiative includes three key objectives:
• Raise public awareness about deaths from overdose
• Remember everyone, without stigma, who has died from overdose
• Recognize the grief experienced by surviving family and friends

Overdoses and deaths from drug use have spiked in recent years. Illicit drugs laced with fentanyl and the pandemic have resulted in double digit increases in mortality rates.

The term Opioid Crisis is being used more frequently to describe this societal issue, the effects of which are being experienced by increasing numbers of individuals and families.

Deaths from overdose are preventable. Too many people are dying in our country from this cause. Finding solutions, begins with building awareness.

Honorariums… What is the Appropriate Amount?

There are many individuals who are hired or who volunteer their time at funerals. These include the organist, choir members and clergy. It is appropriate that those who provide these services receive compensation… if they are hired, an upfront fee will be agreed upon. If they volunteer, consideration needs to be made when deciding on what amount they will receive.

Clergy will spend time with a family and gather information to make the service more meaningful and personal in nature. They prepare for and then commute to and from the service. Clergy will also typically organize and lead in service proceedings. Good funeral etiquette dictates that they receive an honorarium and thank you note.

As part of our services, our directors regularly work with local clergy and lay persons who assist with funerals, and can act as an intermediary if needed. We are familiar with the rates for these services and can coordinate these activities. Rates do vary depending on a few factors including which clergy is officiating. A Look Back at 1951 and the Top Stories from 75 Years Ago

The year 1951 would see technological innovations, military manoeuvres and the introduction of some pop culture gems.

In Canada, the population increased to over 14 million, as the baby boomer births continued to rise. Domestically, highlights included testing the first cobalt “bomb,” a cancer therapy developed in an Ontario lab; the establishment of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority; the first performance of the National Ballet of Canada; and the release of Labatt Blue beer. Government initiatives of the day included the Massey Report which focused on Canadian culture; one recommendation was a message to include “the arts” as a key part of Canada’s international identity.

In the USA, the constitution was amended to limit presidential terms to two. The year also saw extensive forest fires in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington State, and in Canada parts of British Columbia. The Marshall Plan expired, following the distribution of more than US$13.3 billion in foreign aid to rebuild Europe.

There were many nuclear firsts in 1951: the U.S. tested the first thermonuclear weapon in the Marshall Islands and the Soviet Union declared it had developed an atomic bomb. These developments would add fuel to the arms race and the Cold War.

In science, the world’s first experimental nuclear power plant opened in Idaho; the World Meteorological Organization became a specialized agency of the United Nations; the first production car with power steering wheeled off the assembly line; and the lie detector test was used for a murder investigation in the Netherlands.

In entertainment: “I Love Lucy” debuted on CBS; J.D. Salinger’s book, “The Catcher in the Rye” was released; Marlon Brando delivered an award-winning performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire”; and
“Dennis The Menace” was introduced to comic strip fans.

Some Basic Funeral Planning Terms and Definitions

Funeral home professionals often use terms which the general public is unfamiliar with. Here are three such terms and an explanation of what each refers to.

Preneed: this refers to any funeral or cemetery plans which are decided on in advance. Preneed arrangements are recorded wishes with a funeral home. Essentially, the individual will have a preneed file which contains a list of decisions made… such as: the selection of a casket or urn, the desired location for the funeral service and clergy who will preside at it, and sometimes even more specific information such as what music is to be played and which readings or poems will be recited. Preneed arrangements can be prefunded or left till when a person passes.

Prefunding: This is formalizing prearrangements with payment. In this scenario, the person makes decisions on the details of a service and prepays for these services. Two important aspects to prefunding need mentioning. Firstly, any arrangements prefunded will not incur any additional charges when the person passes. These funds are held with a third party and earn income offsetting the effects of inflation. Secondly, some individuals choose to partially prepay for services. They may pay for funeral services, but not cemetery fees. Or, in some instances the funeral home will not take prepayment for services which are not offered directly through them, such as an obituary or catering. These services will need to be paid for at the time of need, when the person passes.

Atneed: This is when decisions are left until when a person passes. Surviving family members make choices about funeral services for their beloved at that time. The decision-making process is typically brief with atneed arrangements. In many instances decisions need to be made immediately when meeting with the funeral director. We are very experienced in working with families under this scenario, so service details will unfold naturally. That said, this is a difficult and emotional time for those entrusted with these arrangements and leaving decisions till this time will add some anxiety and stress to the process.

Funeral Information and Social Media Sharing

If you see an article or post, or a death notice on our page that you feel others need to know about, why not share it?

Some of our articles have insights on topics such as what to consider when making funeral decisions or best practices when grieving the loss of a loved one. Death notices also can be shared to let others know about the death of someone who was mutually known, providing them the opportunity to pay respects in a timely manner.

There are different ways to share an article or post. By clicking the Share arrow at the bottom right of the post, a menu will open up with some selections.

• By Clicking Share now (Friends): the post will appear on your timeline. All of your friends, depending on how close they follow you will see this post.

• By Clicking Messenger: you can send a friend of yours the link privately. This is the most discrete of sharing options.

• By Clicking ‘friend’s profile’ the post will appear on their profile depending on their settings.

• Sharing to a Group you are a member of can also be selected.

The ways we communicate with one another are changing. Newspapers notices are being read less and people are phoning one another less often. Maybe social media can be a tool, to help share timely and important information.
